Cant stress it enough -------------------- Make your own home brew !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
$25 bucks for 19 LTRS of pure joy !!!!!!!!
You have to try it at least once to find out what its all about
Think of the savings over a year
Please post the savings results, I'm sure someone has a calculator
What could you do with the money saved , let alone the clear head every morning

I'd do the calcs for you but can't be arsed. I have done home brew, from a can/kit and at the hold-your-hand franchises, and as much as I like the it (a lot), you're kidding yourself if you think it's justified purely on an economic basis.

That is unless you value your time at about $4/hr in which case it's a winner!!

I'll do the calcs , $15 for a can of Mexican Cervasa, $7.50 for a bag of brew blend (%25 malt, %55, dextrose, %25 corn syrup)
pretty sure that adds up to $22.50.
It then takes 15 minutes to mix all ingredients with 2 ltrs of hot water and 17 ltrs of cold water into a fermenter.
Leave for about 5-8 days , you can hit the water during this time
Pour into clean keg,(takes 10 minutes max)
Walk with keg in hand to fridge, this may take as long as 11 seconds , if you can spare the time connect hoses and turn up gas another 10 seconds!!
Leave for 2 days , then enjoy the best beer ever
Yes it does cost $350 for the set up , and 1 gas bottle at $30 lasts for up to 8 kegs , but after the initial spend it's yours for LIFE,
At $50 for a carton of Caronas it doesn't take long to add up to the cost of the keg set up .
I think if correct after some thought it's 7 weeks
I think for the half an hour to prepare the beer tis a well worth venture , BUT thats only my opinion

Only thing that has held me back is the lack of a dedicated beer fridge to store the lovely preservative free nectar.

So add min $600 to the equation plus running costs - as it is dedicated to the nectar (and maybe the odd WC Eagles leg-opener). I reckon the figures would still hold up well and you'd be in front after a season or two. He he - talked myself into it! Anybody got a cheap beer fridge for sale?

Old school HB in the laundry - for sure.

New school (U-brew etc) where the conditions are controlled, and sterilisation etc correct, are equal - and in most cases - superiour IMO than most shop product.

Whose got a decent beer fridge they don't need?

Used to brew my own from grain and I've still got all the gear. Kegging is definitely the best way to go. I don't have kegs and so need to bottle my brews which is where it all goes to custard for me. Just can't seem to get motivated to sterilise, fill and cap all the bottles. Haven't done it for ages as a result.

If you do brew from a kit, go the little extra and get some good fresh hops to drop in to the fermenter. Kits generally use Isohop for the hop bittering which means they lose out on aroma (although not as much as the megabrewery swills do!)

I guess I was thinking about bottled home brew (where there's a lot of farting around sterilising bottle, capping and handling).

But, comparing apples with apples (rather than keg with bottled beer) it sounds like your home brew costs about $25 + $4 (gas - not sure if that includes gas bottle rental or just refills) + 25 minutes 21 seconds to make (roughly) for 19L. I reckon you've probably been a bit conservative with your time estimates so I'll call to 1/2 hr

50L keg costs about $320, so about $120 for 19L.

So the 1/2hr of your time is saving you $90 (although I still reckon we've been a bit generous with time allowances for the brew).

OK, I'll admit it - I value my time at less than $180/hr (obviously, or I wouldn't be wasting my time writing this!), so keg home brew probably does add up economically.

Although I don't think I could be trusted with 19L of frosty beer on tap at home

ALL very correct , correct temps environments etc play a big part , I picked up a huge fridge at cashy's for $100 , been working like a dream ever since,( 3 yrs) actually a little cold , got it on its highest temp , got to love it
D Harry , you can buy 19 ltr kegs for $85 ( 50 ltrs is a waste of time)
Trust me the beer you make will get you thinking about all the wasted money you have spent on commercial CRAP
This wont happen until you get to understand how EASY it is to brew at home , ,,,,,especially when a few mates come for a beer, if one has a bought corona in his hand its the best time to give him one of your home made ones ,, it will definitely get him thinkin ,
I only push the issue of home brewing cause (I like it , lots) its bloody good
Please try, and enjoy mates,

Good on ya Cassa! Most shop bought beer is overpriced swill.

Folk are too lazy or do not have the time. I put my ginger beer into 1.5l coke bottles. Less washing, screw on cap and no danger of explosion.

A mate and I have our own still, purchased in WA. He is an alchoholic and gets through a 750ml bottle most nights, often more. He takes great great joy in the fact that he is denying the goverment revenue with every bottle. On the off occasion he has had shop bought **** it invariably gets thrown out.

I have to admit it is far far easier than beer but very rewarding at $1.56 a bottle!

That ginger beer is a smooth drop
Try putting a shot of Rum Royal (essentia spirits, I think) instead of the teaspoon of sugar it is quite something then

I made some from a can but did not rate it then I picked up this recipe on the internet. It is so simple, and yes a with the dash of sugar it is magic.

With a kilo of chopped ginger I thought I would have to sieve it but there was virtually no settle out in the bottles. The champagne yeast costs about $4 a batch.

5 gallons water
1-1 1/2 lbs. ginger root, coarsley chopped
17 cups sugar
4 lemons, sliced
3/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1 packet champagne yeast

Boil as much of the water as will fit in your largest pot.

Squeeze in lemons and add squeezed bits.

Add ginger root and cream of tartar.

Add as much sugar as you can if there's room.

Simmer gently for 20-30 minutes.

Put remaining sugar, if any, in 5 gallon plastic pail or similar.

Pour water mixture over.

Add remaining water to 5 gallons and cool to lukewarm.

Taste - this will approximate the taste of the finished product. If necessary add more ginger or ginger powder.

Dissolve yeast in a cup of the mixture, then stir it back in.
Cover and ferment for 7 days at 65-70#65533;F.

Siphon into sterilised bottles (I use 2-litre pop bottles). Cap. Age upright for one week at 60-65#65533;F then store in cool place at 60#65533;F or less.

If necessary release pressure in bottles occasionally to prevent explosions! Take care when opening bottles - can be very lively!!

Drink as is (will be 5-7% alc. by volume). Is also very good, but deadly, mixer for gin on a hot summer's day.

I added 1 tsp. finely chopped Habenero Peppers to one batch - was excellent taste and good for clearing sinuses!!!

I have been making this for years, many of my friends are now making it too.

A 2007 study found that the average Australian walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found that the average Australian drinks 22 gallons of beer a year.

That means the average Australian gets about 41 miles per gallon.

Bloody good value that!

try adding cloves to ya GB brew. Its an antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral, aphrodisiac and has major stimulating properties.
Few stubbies and you will be struggling to get up of the lounge to get another out of the fridge. Have some brewin and cant wait to get stuck into it.
