For simple cutting and pasting, simple filters such as framerate, etc: VirtualDub, the fastest by far.
The Direct Stream Copy mode for splicing is very efficient. The fast forward for long movie is very fast, over the other ones, wich often feel like YouTube on Valium.
Doesn't do photoshop and transitions stuff though.

Great question!

I am after an editor that I can stretch or shrink the time to make time-lapse videos out of both photos and videos as well.

I seem to have an issue with my go pro I'm hoping to correct with video editing software. Can you help?

Every time I use it, it makes it look like I'm doing a pooh stance and falling over a lot? Does anyone else have this?

Vegas, iMovie, vDub, vReveal, and Windows Live Movie Maker.

Depends what you want to do - you might be able to do time-shifts with freeware, but it'll be easier and better with a proper NLVE like Vegas. Much harder to use, of course...

What I use for work:

Adobe Premier Pro for cutting.
Adobe After Effects for colour grading, compositing etc.
Twixtor plugin for time mapping.
Audacity for audio.
Adobe Media Encoder for rendering.

Most of the software mentioned here are not free unless you work for someone who gives it to you or you somehow manage to get a cracked copy.

If you want free video editing software then you can use Windows Movie Maker on Windows or iMovie on the Mac. They probably are not technically free as you get them when you buy the OS. There are some freebie video editing software around as well such as www.squared5.com/

I do video work for a living. I pay Adobe about $70 a month for an open license to use their creative suite.

Surfingboye seems to think they're ALL free. Function- and time-limited free downloads are available for the latest version, 12, and I've seen fully working version 10 for free too. Legit downloads, that is.

Can you do my homework for me? It's easy, you can just keep assuming you have all the answers...

So we're including 30 day trials are we?
In that case, my original list fits the bill.

iMovie comes with OS X, which is free. It'll do for most people.
You'll of course need a Mac or Hackintosh.

Stop being so linear If you do it that way, you end up with acres of quotes. Annoying getting quotes full of the same picture over and over. Especially annoying when you're in New Zealand and your internet is smoke signals and 2 cups and a string - that same picture is loaded over and over and chokes all the bandwidth.
