EDIT

FWIW I think the royal family are changing to a more modern view as it looks like their recent past history hasn't been too flash.

I think the royal family are actually a good idea. It gives the public something to look too, in the same way that people look to Hollywood stars.

I hope you are being facetious because if you are not you are a deadset phucking idiot.

Hey, good job of the edit. I couldn't even tell it was me you were quoting...

No, I am serious. Please tell me more intellectual giant.

First, I am appologising for my criticism of your point of view.

Sorry formulanova for being rude and somewhat immature.

This is a forum for discussion, and I overreacted to your coments without giving you the opportunity to explain what you meant by your comments.

Building upon this, I would be fascinated to know why 'people look to the British Monarchy or the stars of Hollywood'?

Could you try and explain to this 'intellectual giant' what is it that you think that these people 'gain' from vicariously participating in the lives of the British Monarchy or Hollywood stars?

Pippa in that dress gives me something.....I even flicked over from the footy for a few minutes when my wife happily brought it to my attention.

On the same theme the wedding put my wife on such a high that she gave me something a little extra later on too....

So definately a net gain for me and long live the royals When's the next wedding??

No worries IG. You are free to criticize it.

Your question of gain is interesting. I don't think its something tangible, but something is gained.

I am not saying I do, but a lot of people out there need something to focus their lives - whether it is movie stars, the royal family, football, or politics. It's something to think about while suffering the drudgery of their own existence.

People (at least some) do look up to Hollywood stars. Some look up to sporting stars.

I hope that having a royal family is something to unite Britons and get a bit of optimism happening. Before you say that this is not a gain, my belief is that something like optimism has a bigger effect on the economy than most people think.

I think I have read it somewhere that in the USA politicians take the place of the royal family in Britain. Not because they were forced down people's throats, but because people naturally want something to believe in.

Well, no. I was more referring to the enthusiasm the event brought to the evening....

It's called living vicariously.

Everyone does it to a certain extent, including everyone on this forum.

LONDON (Reuters) - The much-mocked hat worn by Princess Beatrice to Britain's royal wedding last month -- widely described as looking like a "toilet seat" -- is up for sale on eBay where bids have reached 18,400 pounds ($29,940).
