First, I am appologising for my criticism of your point of view.
Sorry formulanova for being rude and somewhat immature.
This is a forum for discussion, and I overreacted to your coments without giving you the opportunity to explain what you meant by your comments.
Building upon this, I would be fascinated to know why 'people look to the British Monarchy or the stars of Hollywood'?
Could you try and explain to this 'intellectual giant' what is it that you think that these people 'gain' from vicariously participating in the lives of the British Monarchy or Hollywood stars?
No worries IG. You are free to criticize it.
Your question of gain is interesting. I don't think its something tangible, but something is gained.
I am not saying I do, but a lot of people out there need something to focus their lives - whether it is movie stars, the royal family, football, or politics. It's something to think about while suffering the drudgery of their own existence.
People (at least some) do look up to Hollywood stars. Some look up to sporting stars.
I hope that having a royal family is something to unite Britons and get a bit of optimism happening. Before you say that this is not a gain, my belief is that something like optimism has a bigger effect on the economy than most people think.
I think I have read it somewhere that in the USA politicians take the place of the royal family in Britain. Not because they were forced down people's throats, but because people naturally want something to believe in.
