I was looking at a Pajero but was worried about the fuel guzzling side of things. Couple of friends have them and swear by them. How much litres are you getting on 100km.

Forrester sounds good too. but would prefer a 4wd.....wanna go to wedge more!!

My previous Paj, a '95 NJ 3.5 litre used about 14-15 l/100km. Fantastic vehicle- would highly recommend one if the Forrester is too soft for what you want. Sold mine for $12K. Current diesel Paj gets under 10l/100km on the highway. A 2800 Paj in the price range you are looking at should get maybe 12l/100km. Take a look at the Diesel Pajeros (just remember not the 2650). They are very fuel efficient for the size and surprisingly not too sluggish off the mark, with the torque to get you into and out again of just about anywhere. The difference between fuel consumption between the petrol and diesel is very large.

I recently bought a 96 Mitsubishi Delica for $9800. Its quite a good van, comfortable inside and capable off road. The only off road driving I have done has been on my parent's farm which is fairly hilly and a little swampy in the gullies because of the rain we have had here.

Stacks of room inside. Its possible to have a 2.5 meter board and windsurfer gear inside and have one passenger in the back. Two backseat passengers are possible but one would have to hop over the board.

Its a 2.8 litre diesel and fuel economy isn't too bad plus you get the trick sunroof and moonroof with the electric blinds. Mine has great reflective tint so its really hard to see inside it day or night. You basically have to stick your eyes up to the glass to see inside.

They look a bit silly but they are fun to drive as you are so high up. Very easy to look down on all the pseudo 4WD wagons that are really 1WD that have trouble getting out of a medium sized puddle.

Disadvantages:
The handling is pretty ordinary compared to an ordinary sedan, which is to be expected.
Engine noise is very present as the engine is very close to the cabin.
They are harder to insure as they are an import.
They do not like shopping centre car parks with low roofs.

However overall they are trick vans.

If you want to do serious offroad stuff, get a landcruiser. Nothing has ever come close (maybe a hummer, but $ and ****er rep). You will find parts for them in the middle of nowhere.
Wheels will perfectly fit every offroad track.
And look at wikipedia, scroll to 2nd gen pajero.Also called.........Hyundai Galloper.........
Dont get a newer model, it looks like 20 people designed a different section, put it all together and went with that.(the pajero that is)
Also landcruiser been around since 1951, pajero 1981. Both a long time, but 30yrs more is a fair amount.

No, Mikey. Don't get drawn into a "Which 4WD is most capable off-road" debate/barney. And don't say anything about the 60 series cruiser getting winched up that hill by a Defender due to mechanical failure. Keep that to yourself.

Yes and no. if you wanna sleep in there aswell then the board will have to live on the roof.
mine has a bench seat in the front and my 260 board fits just nicely sitting ontop of the backrest of the seat with plenty of room to spare

( edit ) theres more room in them than a less capable ( offroad that is ) pajero

No you'll spend the rest on parts.
Like water pump housings at $300 (every 50K) and $700 for a park-neutral switch that cost $1 to manufacture

I know being a tight arse spending any amount of money on anything is a challenge for me.
So the laser Vs 4WD was a hard decision but $900 Vs $15000 was a reasonably easy battle.
I will get a 4wd in the near furture, for sure, just not yet.

One of my pet hates is all those suburban mums driving around in great heavy expensive, fuel guzzling, well polished, never been off the road, 4 x 4s and clogging up the roads. Cant see through em. Cant see 'round em. And they're a pain to park.
