Hi All
I've got sore knee's (old sporting injuries come back to haunt) and these really hurt now after a good kiting session.

Any good home remedies? Supplements? etc etc

Hocus pocus also accepted.

(I think I have seen a topic in this forum somewhere, but I can't find it again!!!)

Any help appreciated.

1500mg a day of glucosamine hasn't done anything for my old man knee in 3 months, would increasing the dosage help? What was that other stuff you were telling me about Laurie?

Actually, done properly, kiting is easier on the knees than windsurfing.

I know one older fellow who has windsurfed for decades and who decided (after stuffing his knee [again] jumping) that windsurfing around here is for hardcore younger people, and went looking for a softer option. He's been happily kiting ever since.

Cycling is meant to be good for dodgy knees - it helps to build up the supporting muscles around the joint.

i recommend Bikram Yoga, i used to suffer from bad knees until i did this for about 4 weeks. Now I do it about once a month - and since then have never had any knee pain.

The guy who developed bikram yoga did it purely to improve kneee strength as he screwed his knees up by dropping weights on them.

gelatin - one teaspoon per day, in your morning coffee (or tea). Your joints will love you for it.

I have an arthritic old uncle who swears by it, reckons he can tap dance for two hours a day now (seriously, he does swear by it)

Also have a mate who plays hockey. He was near to chucking it in coz his knees were so bad. Started on the gelatin and says he's never had it so good.

I bet you take liquid gel capped pain relievers etc. what do you think that gel coating is made of

I'd eat a teaspoon of cow poo every day if it would take the pain away, it's particularly bad right now. I wonder if I took all of:
  • Glucosamine and condroitin

  • MSM

  • Gelatin

daily, whether it would work? Could there be any adverse side effects to the combination? I'm a bit conservative when it comes to drugs, not that these really are, but I don't even take painkillers as a rule.

There's a "joint food" powder product (maybe Nature's Own) with glucosamine, condroitin and msm in it.
Fish oil, 4 caps a day, is also good for joints and a heap of other ailments too.
I've been taking that stuff for a few years with no adverse side effects that I'm aware of. Cant speak for the gelatin or cow poo.

Retired from soccer when I turned 33 because of sore knees. Took this stuff and played another 6 years of rugby union, kitesurfed and surfed with no more soreness.

Now I only use it if I feel a bit of joint pain after a few sessions in a row.

Well, i have gone onto
- the joint food (same type of stuff as the pic)
- 1 teaspoon of hoof (gelatine)
- fish oil several times per day

And its amazing, something is working, i didn't wake up with an aching knee and i only started yesterday, i'll see hw it goes over the next couple of weeks, then start dropping things to see what is doing the trick..

Thanks for the advice :)

My knees get really sore if i sail in choppy water- henley, milang, chicken shop.

Middleton has nice flats inbetween the waves that makes it easier on the knees.

I used to wear a knee sock to keep my knees warm, helped a fair bit- I think Futuro was the brand.

I also have found that the kit you use can make a big difference- some kites seem to be a little harsher on the body, a flexy board and soft foot pads help.. my 2c

PS I have had multiple strains of ligaments and multiple kneecap dislocations of both knees from basketball but nothing serious from kiting, fingers crossed.

I have done damage to the MCL on my right knee twice to the point that my knee used to lock up on me unexpectedly a couple of times a day.

I've been taking the NutraLife MSM/Gluco/Condroitin plus fish oil caps every day for the past couple of years as well as plently of cycling to work in the off season and my knee does not give my any bother at all now.

i looked into this a while ago myself and did the research on what would also be the best supplements to take.

i ended up going with RegenR8 from the BodyScience range as it had good levels of the 3 key ingredients needed and also Manganese which apparently aids in absorption of the ingredients below...(and the price was inline with most other supplements out there)

Glucosamine HCL750mg
Chondroitin Sulfate (Shark)300mg
MSM (Methylsulfonyl Methane)200mg
www.bodyscience.com.au/page/supplements/flypage/product_id/113

Body Science seem to also supply lots of football teams and all kinds of other sporting professionals which i thought must mean they make a quality product - check the website here.
www.bodyscience.com.au/page/bodyscience/team

Apparently it's important to take both the Glucosamine HCL and Chondroitin Sulfate together...taking just one on their own is less effective (or ineffective....not sure it was a while ago that i looked into all this stuff)

The bees knees one that was recommended to me use was CosaminDS - but it is a product from the US and came with the price tag to match and so i just ended up going with the BodyScience product as the ingredients/levels were much the same.

More info on it here
www.biocel.com.au/data-sheet.html
www.vitasentials.com/cosamin_ds.htm

Also like mentioned above - Fish Oil was another recommended ingredient to take and i might try the Gelatin out too.

And doing forum searches on things like "knees" or "Glucosamine" will hit you will heaps of talk on this topic.

and finally plenty of reading on it all here
www.kneeguru.co.uk/

knees....i hate em, i want a new set please

Saffieboy,

Maybe you should contact Quebecoismen and buy a Mayak surfbike - best of both worlds - surfing and cycling all rolled into one big bundle of fun.

BTW-have very dodgy knees and find as little as possible any activity outside windsurfing works really well for knees(but not much good for fitness). Icing then Emugel is okay for temp relief and haven't had much luck with supplements. Also wear a knee brace when sailing seems to reducve swelling / soreness. There was another thread on this about 3 months back.

Cycling every day was part of my recovery plan from any serious knee injuries that i had- it strengthens the muscles as previously stated but there is no jarring or impact to cause damage or aggravate- from memory I think aqua aerobics was meant to be good as well...

yeh cycling is the best - go to those "Spin" classes offered up at gyms on a regular basis which will also sort out your anaerobic fitness at the same time....also usually very good on the eyes as well

My sore knees made me formally retire from heavy weather windsurfing 3 years ago. I even arranged a helicopter to video of my last sail! Then I got talked into visiting a special Fisio.
He explained that the knee cap (patella) has a vertical keel on the inside of it, the keel runs up and down a groove in soft tissue and cartilage on the front of the knee joint. The patella gets out of line due to the tendons that centralise it tightening, causing inflamation and pain on movement.
Three or four visits that involved streching excercises and taping the patella across for a few weeks fixed the problem on both knees. The last couple of years have been the best windsurfing ever and the only maintenance required is when I occaisionally I stretch the patella tendon if it feels tight.
Martin Rooney was the Fisio (himself a windsurfer) and he works in Cottesloe, but I think most fisios know the technique.
This is the best thing to happen to me...Good luck

I have no idea, I just figured that since it already contained methane..., but pure methane is odourless. The sulfur component might contribute to H2S generation, a more likely candidate for bad smell. I've also been farting a lot recently, but whether it's more than usual I don't know.

Anyway, I'm starting to think that supplements aren't the answer for me, about five months of munching them has produced no noticeable improvement so, since X-rays show nothing, I'm thinking MRI and keyhole surgery could be the answer. It's just the one knee, there's a locking point and it's quite certainly from a game of rugby about 15 years ago, so a significant cartilage tear is quite likely what's in there. Next off season maybe.
