"In January, the research team spent more than four days testing the new wetsuit designs off the northern WA coast. Mr Jolly said in one encounter a tiger shark circled a dummy covered in the "cryptic" design, which helps make the wearer less visible to the shark, for six minutes before deciding to attack a dummy covered in traditional black neoprene."

I would have sh!t myself to death in six minutes.

Some of the WCT Female Surfers smell really nice when in the water... Fragrant hair from shampoo, perfume on their skin, and maybe some sort of fragrant wetsuit wash... I really noticed it last Easter at Winki during the Bells comp... I'm thinking that sharks would actually smell it... potentially turning them off?...

May point... I think a wetsuit/rashie rinse fragrant wash might also assist... needs research, testing etc...

I guess if you get eaten, they don't work.

To be eaten by shark is like win on lottery.
Odd the same.
Why not to join this too ?
New shark lottery system will work like that.
All participants pay one off fee say $5 lifetime, city council, and other sponsors support with extra funds.
The winner have $1,000,000 at least for any extremities eaten or family have $5 mln for whole lot .
That should bring more tourist willing to participate too

Cheating like covering himself with fish oil - prohibited.

swim at dawn or dusk at cactus beach, seaward fraser or stradbroke, or the GWS dive sites or any other shark hotspots and ask yourself how good your odds are mate

Supposedly in our canals on GC plenty off bull sharks.
No locals will swim here for sure.
But we do everyday , as wind only allow.
I think that awareness helps me master my water starts and gybing too

Initial testing in the Nile River didn't go so well...

Now the proper experiment should be like that : catch some fearsome sharks and throw to the Nile river.
in this scientific experiment we could learn if :
shark will eat crock ? , that means zebra are saved
or crock will eat shark first then zebra ?
shark will eat zebra ?
Zebra eat shark ?
we are lucky that there are not Amazon piranhas in this equation. I have already head ache

I surf at Mullaloo point at dawn. Its one of the biggest hot spots for GW shark detections in WA. I actually like it when someone else paddles out

One of the local windsurfers told me a story once. I've forgotten most of the details, but it goes something like this. An plump old guy used to go swimming out in the ocean near Victor Harbour (or in that area). He carried a small stick with him, and whenever a shark would come too close, he would give the shark a sharp poke. Apparently this was a technique he learnt during WW2 when his ship? was sunk?, and he was stranded in the ocean waiting to be rescued.

Seeing the spear fisher poke the shark with the end of his gun reminded me of the above story.

Another option for the ladies, the SharKini. The shark will think it already took a bite out of you previously.

I have seen great whites eat....... Coke cans, white floats and orange floats, giant pectorals ,seagulls, abatross ,a sting ray, kelp, seals, a boat fender, I large size pizza, and our 50 pound anchor! I really don't think any colour is going to change their mind when they are in hunting mode!

I agree. When you enter the water your position on the food chain alters.

Every day we pass cars and trucks going in the opposite direction and less than 1500mm away, doing 100 kmh (closing speed 200kmh) and we don't even blink an eyelid.

We all take the risks and we live with them.
