Came across the revenue raiser resistance page on FB, watched a couple of videos and started thinking about a radar detector.
Checked on eBay and it seems they are going for $20? Wtf? What happened to the day these used to cost $600+?
Anyone had any experience with these cheap gadgets?
What's wrong with driving within the speed limit? In a hurry to be somewhere?
Sometimes my speed used to creep up if I wasn't paying attention to it. Now all the GreenCars have cruise control, I just bring myself up to the limit and switch it on, no worries about creeping over anymore. In the cars at least, no CC on the bike.
Must say I'm lovin the cruise control on our new car. The braking effect on downhill has improved so much. Getting on to the annoying driver thread but I'm sitting exactly on the speed limit so the numpty overtakes then slows down..... ![]()
Back to radar $1500 fine and 9 points. Carrying a handgun unregistered and unlicensed in public $400. NSW from memory cars.com article.
Seems silly but I guess you're more likely to kill more people more often thinking you can speed everywhere with a radar protecting yourself.
HW now I guess....
On a practical note aren't the cops using Laser not radar??
This thread is about radar detectors. Stick to the topic or take your cruise control to the grandma lane and don't come back.
Thanks for this topic m8 - bloody parasites got me twice on the flats before a hill at 8 ks over ![]()
TBH I don't speed that much, maybe 10% here and there but if radar detectors are that cheap, why wouldn't I get one? -just so I know where the buggers are.
But u may be right, they could be using laser, hence the RD's are so cheap now?
Do radar detectors bring kids back to life after they have been killed due to an accident caused by speeding?

A limit is a limit, you deserved it. You obviously haven't done the maths on the effect an extra 8 kph has on the final collision speed, after an equivalent time on the brakes, to someone obeying the law.
I got dinged for, I think it was only 4kph over the limit in Vic. I deserved it, deserved twice the fine in fact.

hi unhooked
when.i did some reaearch (looking on the internet
) I found the one above to be the best choice by far looking at the tests. I cant say about the cheapies but I would say you gets what you pays for...
In regard to the other co.ments telling you not to speed well that depends where and how often you drive....
I used to have a pool business and drive a Kia van full of pool equipment. Hardly a sports car.
I found cameras were strategically placed in zones that changed from 80 to 90 to 70 etc. If was in 90 zone and missed the one 80 sign stuck behind a maccas billboard and was still doing 90 then I was a criminal and got fined.
I used to get one to two of those a year.
If you put a detector in your car it will beep when it detects a camera thus alerting you to your criminal act and make you slow down. I really dont see the problem with that. If you are honest it is just alerting you to a mistake you are making...
clever people who drive the same route to work evrry day who know all the limits on a particular road will argue otherwise but I say to them try running a business that involves getting places you have never been to before. Of course you are going to mess up every now and then. One of these deviceswhich are perfectly legal in WA will help.

Well why not get one of those GPS devices that will bip at you speed camera or not? If you're willing to make that mistake when there is no speed camera then you can hardly call it an "honest" mistake.
And in answer to Crusoe's argument....how many time do you take your eyes off the road at busy intersections to check your speed?
And if speed cameras are intented to save childrens lives why arent they permanently place arounf school areas?
I thought it was only pervs and kiddie fiddlers that lurked in bushes taking covert pictures of people.
Driving a crap car with dodgy brakes is just as bad as speeding. Why are cars checked once a year by a government run agency in most civilised countries to check they work . That might save a few children..
Speeding is wrong. Speed cameras are revenue makers and dont catch the real a holes...Every one know that..
That sounds great Ian. Where do I get one that works?
my GPS was hopeless at that...
Google maps is shocking too.
Do you use this system? Have you tried it. Its pretty dodge. Especially in new areas.

Sounds like a great source of revenue to me
You are right of course.
Checking cars once a year to make sure they are safe is a government scam and a waste
bad idea. India and Portugal dont do it why should WA.
Scandinavian countries with impressive road safety stats do tho...
She'll be right...Kids....
I wonder if we took a pole to see who believes "Speed cameras are just a revenue maker", would more people who think speeding (even just a little bit) is ok, would be the one agreeing with this statement.
If nobody broke the speed limit ("Broke" means break the law) then we wouldn't need speed cameras. Hence no revenue. If you want speed cameras to be abolished then stop speeding. Simple solution.
There are no justifiable excuses. Just get out of bed earlier.

Do the maths with a car with dodgy brakes and bald tyres in the wet...Thats whos behind you....
I've did a bit of research on them and as above the Valentine one seems to be the best.
Have a look at some car forums. They often do a group but at a discounted price.

This is like the ad where they show you hitting something at the higher speed and just missing it if you had been 10km/h slower.
What about if you had been paying attention at 130km/h and not paying attention at 90km/h? How much delay in your reaction time would it take to make these stopping distances equal?
I am not arguing against speed limits. I am just annoyed when this argument is brought up on the ads, and it ignores the fact that you really shouldn't be sitting up that close to someone at those speeds where it matters so much and is such a limiting factor. If you take it all the way down, slow down to walking speed, and the world will be a safer place.
I do have to laugh at those parking garages where the speed limit is 10km or 8km/h. Seriously? Does anyone drive that slow? Did the 10km/h place seem so fast that they had to drop it down to 8km/h to prevent the surge in fatalities?

if they put speed cameras in blackspots then sure, when they are on the freeway. at the bottom of hills etc then i'll keep using my radar detector and have been using one for the last 15 years . The police can go F$ck themselves with their road safety campaign, it's a crock of sh!t

Gee dusta, you sound like some one who clocked up a few speeding tickets and still looking for some one to blame.

actually had farkall over the past 15 years .
myusername it detects everything except cameras facing backwards but never been done by one .
Fixed cameras/multinovas/hand held everything

That's the straw man argument Sotired.
But anyway.
You'd have to be asleep at the wheel for an extra 2 seconds, The stopping distance at 130 kph is 120 metres, at 90 kph it's 64 metres. To waste 56 metres at 90 kph, 25 metres per second, that's 2 seconds.
If you're asleep for 2 seconds you've hopefully already run off the road, coming to rest safely in a ditch, before you hit anything.
Alertness is a factor but unfortunately you can't police it. Just because you can't police one factor doesn't mean you should throw your hands up on the ones that can be policed.
Oh, and + 1
For revenue raising scum. They hide those cameras and break all sorts of rules setting them up. AND they only test them once a year when they are potentially lugging them in and out of a car 3-4 times a day 365 days a year.
Anyone who does not acknowledge that Police in all states are using Radar/speed cameras as revenue raisers is living in political correct la la land.
People breaking the speed limit is not causing fatalities.
People driving too fast for the immediate road conditions is causing road fatalities.
Below is an interesting read. Distracted driving is listed as the number one cause of accidents.
seriousaccidents.com/legal-advice/top-causes-of-car-accidents/
And this one from ABC.http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/ockhamsrazor/why-speed-isn't-the-only-factor-in-the-road-toll/6831300
some people clearly like to present themselves as pillars of the community and moral police when it comes to this subject.
Others clearly lack the moral compass to steer betweenright and wrong.
Im not taking the high road or low road on this one
Radar detectors sh!t me. Should be banned. Should be BIG fines for their use. 6 demerits, >$1500 fine.
The use of radar detectors shows an intent to break the law. Lack of duty of care for other road users. Complete selfishness...
AND, on top of all that, those who I see using them look like complete tossers... Actually, look and behave exactly as described above...
Radar detectors

So what? And they probably budget for it. But it takes money to run a government. To look after motorists banged up in hospital. If tossers stopped speeding and I had to pay more rates/taxes to make up the budget deficit that'd be good. The roads would be a much better place to be on.

Unfortunately speed cameras are never going to stop hoons and the most dangerous drivers. I wish they did.
What the covert ones do is catch people who may be slightly over the limit for a short period of time, like rolling down a hill or overtaking someone going 20-30 km/h under the limit on a straight, safe 100km/h road. Travelling at 105-110 for a few seconds in this scenario is not unsafe. Only a bad driver or authoritarian would think that was unsafe. Obviously limits have a buffer for safety. It's not as if you go 74km/h in a 70 zone someone is going to die - but you can be fined for this terrible infraction in Vic.
What I find interesting is how many relatively narrow and twisty country roads have 100km/h limits when modern two and three lane freeways full of modern cars have the same speed limit. It's nonsense. Either the country roads should have lower limits or the freeways higher limits or better still - both.
In some more enlightened states like SA and the NT, remote highways have 110, 130 or no speed limits when appropriate.
As for radar, I don't have one but I see them as another way of controlling one's speed. It's a good thing.
Germans would find this speed argument at least on freeways very silly. www.gettingaroundgermany.info/autobahn.shtml
