How can you be so cynical?? Besides which, we call "it" climate change now because nobody can deny that the climate does change.

If you take one record cold day as evidence against, then you have to take all the positive indicators as evidence for.

"Gee it's pretty cold today, can you believe the stupid scientists think it's actually getting warmer? hahaha"

It's the average temp that is important, plus with unstable weather systems it is expected that there will be extreme events, both above and below the norm.

Shouldn't everybody know this by now?

Exactly. That's why "they" stopped calling it "global warming" and started calling it "climate change"

Your right, they should. I mean it's only been happening for millions of years.

David Shukman of the BBC reported on how one of the longest cold snaps for a generation, fits in with theories of a warming planet and global climate change.

I would encourage you to read the latest report on this matter from the IPCC Risks of extreme events you will see that they have toned down their original comments on this massively. Their latest comments more accurately reflect the current scientific literature on this subject. At long last. This summary of findings came out on the Friday just gone. Reporting on this matter is entirely dependent on what side of the fence the commentators is on. It will be interesting to see how the Govt's retric on this matter changes going forward.

http://ipcc-wg2.gov/SREX/

The issue with regard to extreme events is that its climate variability and not climate change that is causing these issues. The reason that the cost of these natural disasters are increasing so much is not to do with climate change either - a whole body of peer reviewed science shows that the cause of these increases in costs is due to societal factors - namely that of wealth, population and inflation. When you strip these components out of the numbers there is no climate signal in the data what-so-ever. Yes there is chance that we may see more intense or more frequent events in some of the perils but not for a considerable period of time. Alot of the retric on this topic to date has also been reported fairly poorly. Eg: More intense bushfires - well for one there is no such thing as a bushfire intensity measurement as of yet - so how can they be more intense if we do not know what intensity is yet? What they should be saying is that factors that can encourage bushfires (eg: heat waves) are more likely to increase if there is a warming of the planet. I could go on for hours on this subject but will finish up before I bore too many people!

So yes the debate is alive and well but you need to be careful on some of the details!!!!!

In the local paper it is reported that a dairy farmer has installed a shade cloth over his feed lot 'to help deal with climate change'.

And also the same paper had an advert saying 'saw logs wanted - get in before the carbon tax'

I am at a loss to even contemplate what utter dribble both of these statements are.

Crikey, Everyone knows Global Warming and CO2 is responsible for Extreme Cold, My chocolate bar melted in my car today, that was Global Warming's fault. two nights ago I had to use my doona, that's Global Warming making the weather colder at night.

I had a dog once, a proper bull terrier, she died from heat exhaustion, that was global warming, 1984, before everyone even knew what it was, it killed my dog.

blaming your lack of reponsibility for another member of the family,
Namely your dog, on lack of money (or global warming), is just the weakest excuse I've heard yet,
I note you didn't die of dehydration, only your dog (why is this ?)
I bet you didn't even go hungry,
Food cost money too
If it came to it,
I would ensure my dog got the last drop of water, not me,
"Animal lover extrodinare"

By the way, chocolate bars have been melting in cars since the begining of time !
your lack of foresight or appetite would be responsible for that

Toots, this is your lucky day because I just read an article wot sez that keeping a dog has a higher carbon footprint than owning a SUV. Yes! That's right!
Here it is right here on the internet so it must be true. phys.org/news/2009-11-dogs-larger-carbon-footprint-suv.html

So now your dog is dead, well long dead from what you say, then you can rush out and buy a new landcruiser. In fact, because it's been dead for so long, feel free to buy two!

Humour is lost on the self absorbed, emotionally inebriated ;)
747, straight over your head ;)

May you and your precious Dogs live forever and ever, coz no one else does.

I just had a shower, coz I felt a bit unclean, I was feeling unclean due to Global Warming, now off to the Cafe for a latte to discuss the situation and find some solutions from the Latte crowd, they have all the answers.
If my Latte is cold, I'm sure its Global Warming.

The recent record low temperature is within the general realms of the "50 year storm". So nothing to get too excited about.

However it is hard to ignore the fact that the polar ice caps are receding. Here's some mathematical stats;
- Area of All Oceans - 361 Million Square Kilometers.
- Area of Antarctica - 14 Million Square Kilometers (3.8% of the oceans).
- Ancient Ice Sheet Thickness averages around 1.6km thick (*1) over Antarctica, and there are only very few mountain ranges where there is no ice cover.
- There is roughly 22 Million Cubic Kilometers of Ice there.
- 22Mkm/360Mkm = 60m, or enough ice/water to increase water levels by 60m.

Sure, this is the extreme case, but with the current rate of Glacial & Ice Sheet Recessions, we are pretty much certain to see average sea levels rise 10-20cm "sooner rather than later".

Shakleton's photos from the 1900's (100 years ago) compared to current evidence show massive recessions in glaciers.

On the other hand, there is evidence of far lower sea levels in ice age periods. And obviously far larger and thicker ice caps. One of the partial unknowns is whether the glacial recessions are because of human impact, or whether it is because of a natural cycle of Ice Age & Non Ice Age or "Melt" periods. Or a little bit of both.

Either way, it's hard to refute that we are in a "Melt Stage".

As human's we will adapt, and many other animals will adapt. Other won't be as fortunate.

(*1 - yes, 1.6km thick, hard to believe or comprehend.... The thickest parts of the Antarctic Ice Sheet are actually nearly 3 Miles thick, or 15000 feet or 4.5km thick. Staggering!)

I think someone on here even said, "don't confuse the weather with climate change" (*2). Of course they are related, but we will always have extreme weather days that are balanced off with the opposite to generate an "average". Climate Change obviously focuses on the "averages".

(*2 - a few months ago, different topic).

Global warming is responsible for my curry being cold in the middle when I put it in the microwave. Its related to weather and the recent Japanese Tidal Wave and Climate Change; The Globe warmed up causing a dramatic change in Climate, causing the Biggest Tidal Wave in history, never has the world seen such a disaster because they didnt exist before microwave ovens were invented. The world was put here as it is by God, and God is punishing us for using all his Oil and Coal with Tidal Waves and Earthquakes, and microwaves that dont heat up the food evenly.

the more microwave Ovens we have that work properly, the less global warming and climate change would be related.

the word Tsunami was invented when Japan had a tidal wave because there was no word for Tidal wave because there was no such thing as a Tidal wave until one hit Japan.

Microwave Ovens, Japan, Global Warming and Climate change are all from the same family,

Sorry if my post is too long, its Global Warming making me do extreme things.
