So, what does the rest of the world think? Nothing. They do not care at all, and they don't even notice.

Australia could sink into the ocean, and it would make next to no difference to the world at large at all.
There are more cities in the world with a greater population of our entire country than we have cities. A lot more.

That said, there are only four (?) cities in the U.S. with a population > 2m.

The mining tax was about getting a fair return on the enormous profits that the Miners were making. The miners reap their profit from a resource that's owned by Australians. It was a fair and reasonable tax that was destroyed by the multimillion dollar campaign mounted by the miners and their foot soldiers the Liberal party aided by the support of the right wing media.

*cough* bull**** *cough*

It was about giving them extra money. They budgeted it to try get a surplus and they even failed miserably at that. How exactly did liberals destroy it?

Macklin and Shorten have been working on the NDIS for fricken years mate. But you think they thought it up 2 weeks before the election so they could improve they're popularity????? I mean I should laugh but I just find this sad.

Oh and on the carbon tax, PM. Rudd got it though the Reps but the greens and your mob blocked it in the senate......we got the **** kicked out of us....and Gillard said there would be no carbon tax. After the election she saw the possibility of getting it through the senate.....and she took it. Good bloody thing to. Can you imagine trying to get it up now? It's good, far sighted policy, unless you think Andrew Bolt is Australia's best climate scientist.

We are fortunate not to live in a true democracy!

We have divisions of power which blend;

Autocracy, with the Queen as head of state

Platonic society, with an independent Judiciary

Democracy, with numerous parliamentary houses, diluting mob rule

Meritocracy, in the form of a Public Service, executing public policy

A lot of statutes to come out of parliament are based on legal precedents and principles established by our judiciary.

Hard to improve the system, other than getting more people involved in the party system. How do you get people to contribute to a political party? We are less inclined to be involved in tribes and churches these days.

Sure, there might have been tweets about it, but who actually cares? Really? No one cares. They would pay as much attention to a change in a prime minister as we do to their country. There are tweets for all sorts of things all the time, and its just a news service trying to be modern.

I don't know who the prime minister of the UK is at the moment. I could probably narrow it down from a list because I would have heard it somewhere, but I don't care enough to remember. If they changed tomorrow, unless I saw it in a headline, I wouldn't care.

Who is the prime minister of Canada right now?

There is. It's called informal voting.

Just submit your ballot paper with:
a) nothing written on it; or
b) "none of the above" written on it; or
c) your favourite rant written on it.

Although I think an even better strategy is, for those of us living in a safe labor or coalition seat, to vote for the other side to make our seat as marginal as possible. Stop the politicians pandering only to issues in the marginal seats and give the majority of us who live elsewhere more attention.

I'd agree people overseas probably don't care that much. Same as, as you said, most of us not really caring about who the PM of the UK and Canada are.

But Craig66 said we "don't rate a thought" which is patently not true. Look at the hits the misogyny speech got. I'm not saying it's much more of thought that, "Look at those nutty Aussie politicians at it again." People I know OS are to a person bemused at the combination we have of great economic performance (relative to the rest of the world) and a woeful political situation. That, and we're a pack of wingers complaining about our situation. (This from pommies can you belief?)

The PMs are David Cameron and Stephen Harper btw - both conservatives so that should tell you which way the political wind is blowing in Westminster countries. Generalising from your own lack of knowledge is a pretty unconvincing way of making an argument.

I'd like to see pollies sign an employment contract like everyone else has to. If they don't deliver 80% of what is in their contract each year, they get fired and we go back to an election. If they don't deliver 90%, they don't get increases.

The contract should state what they intend delivering each year for the next 4 years based on their election promises. Then we may actually see them doing something instead of bickering

I was trying to make the point that the people I have met recently have next to no knowledge of our political system. The people from Canada at least understand the system a bit better than those from the USA. Admittedly, the people I am talking about are the younger generation, but still, I think a lot of them wouldn't be surprised if we had a King as our head of state.

I generalized, because I think most people will also not know about the politics of another country.

Maybe those pommies have a point... good economic performance, a political party that appears to be scared of the media, and everyone else whining about 'how bad things are'.
