Have watched this post with interest, Sorry can't watch the vid.
Making sure your kid's can swim is a great thing , it should be manditory here with our ocean ,swimming lifestyle,


BUT , he only reason children drown is because no on is supervising them in the water!!!!,
the rules for our pool are ,kids (they are all over 12 now) MUST be competent swimmers , or don't bring em over.
I just think that we have children , because we love them , watching them %100 of the time they are in water is the only safe way to prevent drownings, especially the young ones.

Ahh DunkO I see you've edited your heroic 10ft surf post and just when I was going to suggest it must be your rudder that is weighing you down.




No mate the trick is to take a deep breath and then hold most of it in your lungs, which provides your flotation. Then you just breathe very shallowly which provides your body with 02.

You should give it a crack, even an infant can master it. I'm sure given a year or three you'll get the hang of it.

I can only just float with my lungs at max. capacity, but only for 30 seconds or so before my legs drag me under. My 9yo sinks like a lead weight and there's no way he can float. I remember my aunty falling asleep whilst floating on her back once on the Murray River when on holiday, we had to walk along the bank & yell at her to wake up before she went too far downstream (she was full of hot air most of the time though). I could never get the hang of floating, and yep - I tried to do it for years. You can't assume that everyone can do it - because it's very little to do with skill, more so to do with body density.

Good on you for teaching your kids very early & you should be happy that this works for them - I doubt anyone disagrees with that...but...it's no substitution for parental supervision, which I'm sure you agree with. I'd like to know that my kids 'could' roll-over & float like the toddler in the vid - and might even give it a try, but I'll never leave them unattended in the water to see if they can "self-rescue".
