"Officer, officer, we're about to do something highly legal but completely dangerous. You should watch."

Not big, not clever, but f*ckin' funny. (Starts at 15 seconds)

I've never understood the hate directed towards cyclists.

I went to an AFL game some years ago and thought the same thing when people were yelling insults and getting visibly upset at the opposition! I thought what the hell? are you people normal in the head? I think I know the answer.

It's the fact that so many cyclists ride with a huge sense of arrogance. They run red lights, don't stop at stop signs and basically ignore all the road rules that don't suit them. Then they complain that we don't give them enough respect as road users. They also tend to love riding on highways despite there being a dedicated cycling path off the road right next to them...holding up traffic in the process. Oh and let's not forget the douchbag lyrca **** that ride in packs of 30, 4 abreast going 20 km an hour in a 70 zone.

But the worst of all has to be how they really think they're all doing the world a favour. You're not.

I regularly ride a bicycle on cycle paths and designated roads. Never on highways or major arterials. I stop at stop signs and red lights. I don't like it when I see people doing what you mention above, but that doesn't mean all cyclists are like that.

I spend hours and hours and hours on my bike.
Some weeks i do around 400kms.
I ride on Bike paths, in Bike lanes and on Highways( i try to avoid). I also ride in a peleton every Sat.
I obey road rules.

In the peleton we are two abreast at most. Our av. speed is around 30-34 so sometimes much faster. we leave at 6am on a Sat so there is little traffic. On the highway legs there are 2 lanes of traffic (leech highway, Canning Highway, Riverside drive and manning road) so plenty of room for dickhead drivers in a hurry to do their weekend cashies.

How difficult is it for drivers to perhaps wait an extra 20 seconds maybe 1 minute at most to pull out and go around?

Until you ride a bike or ride in a peleton you will never get it.

Was just thinking. I spent 5 years riding around central london daily with only 1 drama where i got knocked off by a tripping driver. In Perth i have been spat on shouted at had stuff thrown at me and abused. Wierd.

It's the fact that so many drivers drive with a huge sense of arrogance.
They run red lights, don't stop at stop signs, drive excessivly fast and basically ignore all the road rules that don't suit them.
Then they complain that there are too many red light cameras, RBT's or speeding cameras.

They also tend to love driving fast on highways despite there being a dedicated speed limit. Oh and let's not forget the 4WD drivers who have a big ass 4WD thats never been off road that they believe in some ways adds to the prestige of thier already disordered personality.

But the worst of all has to be how they really think they own the road more than anyone else. You don't.

Pretty sure the roads are clogged up with cars, not bicycles. Would ride cycleways more if they were designed for bikes and had no motorises parking their cars in tehm

Similar thing for me, I spent years cycling to work in London with no dramas.
I lasted 2 weeks in Sydney, I was knocked over by a bus and thrown across a lane. Thankfully no injuries but I stopped then and there, I realised that Sydney drivers really didn't notice or take care for cyclists.

Take care? I had motorists hurl abuse at me more than once. Because they had to change lanes. On a 3 lane highway with little traffic on it. Apparently, I'm not allowed to take up the whole of the left lane even if the other two are empty. I was inconveniencing them in some small way therefore I was an utter bastard. [}:)]

cycling is good

its great for your heart and mental well being (which means that you are then nice to people - even on seabreeze)

there is a 74 % chance that its good for the environment

You aren't hauling 1.5 tons of metal around with you just to go to the shops

Most drivers are pretty cool but have had half eaten maccas chucked at me for no reason. There is def a bad culture on the roads here in perth -you dont need to be on a bike to see it - you see it as a driver.

Hoons + 4wds hogging the right hand lane 15 kmh below the speed limit = cars zig zagging everywhere

Love my car too -its great for road trips its a big old vs II Commodore wagon ( 2 bikes fit in it nicely) - but try and get on the bike whenever possible

As a keen recreational cyclist I agree with GreenPat and Poor Relative...

After three (3) accidents involving cars that resulted in trips to casualty and time in hospital, I now keep to the cycle paths and/or surburban roads...

The clip was amazing - but the guy was a dickhead with no forethought for the safety of himself or others. He even admits to being a long term dickhead...

I was actually lucky enough to meet some of the Coast longboarding crew back in 2008 although I felt about 20 years too old. You'd be surprised how safety conscious they are at times, and how reckless they can be at other times.

This is a Saturday meetup. Note that everyone has a helmet on, the rule is "No Helmet, you go home"

And this is one of their vans. My dream ride!

Well it seems he almost went out knowing he was likely to 'skittle' a cyclist... and didn't seem to surprised or upset when he did.

And although I didn't watch the whole thing, there were sections where one of them didn't even have a shirt on, and one (at least) with no shoes...

My wife's a nurse who specialises in wound care/management - much of it resulting from accidents (others cancers and other surgeries) - and she can be very descriptive over the types of injuries she sees and treats and the long term impact... at 70kph the bloke without a shirt is going to loose a serious amount of skin if he comes off badly...

...and then maybe I'm just starting to get old and sensible. I carry plenty of scars from doing stupid things in my teens and 20's... even my early 30's.

Nah, you're right. That's what I meant, they are reckless but also have some strict safety rules.

Insisting on wearing a helmet is good, but then they go and miss an oncoming truck by inches. Mental.

as a downhill skater i can say that is not a normal occurrence! haha the australian community is incredibly safety conscious to the degree at which the senior riders in each city regulate the hills that people skate to ensure that people are skating within their limits!

in aus we have a much harder time than cyclists because we are legally not aloud to ride roads with a marked dividing line or medium strip or any road with a speed limit of over 50 (essentially all the decent safe roads).

in SA we have a real problem because we essentially do not have anywhere legal to skate and people who don't understand the sport don't even bother trying to understand the sport and are pretty much calling for an outright ban!

we don't wanna skate illegally we just don't have a choice! haha

sorry for the rant! the sport just means allot to me!

I love riding my bike. But hands down Perth is a crap place to be a cyclist. Other cities like Canberra beat it hands down for dedicated cycle paths which link suburbs Unis and the CBD.

After many near misses with very ignorant and rude drivers, I now only take mine out onto the cycle path down the river. Not worth getting knocked over and getting killed.

Well I can't exactly argue against that

Although...I still think cyclist should have to pay to register their bike if they want the same rights as the rest of us. I have to pay a rego on all my cars to be allowed to use them on the road. I still cannot see why a cyclist is any different? But I'm happy to be informed.

OH and cool vid ^^
Can't say I'm a fan of the music from Blood Diamond being in it...being in Australia and all
