If you're going to die soon get something that allows you to live life to the full
If it were me i'd get a troopie...

I'd have a bed in the back, waeco, room for the toys etc etc

Better than any porsche IMO.

A BMW 2004 7 series long wheel base for $30K, easily will look the part, repairs thru the roof.

What about a 2012 Kia Optima---has a wow factor.

Cheaper option Toyota Aurion Presara, top model in range is nice too.

Don't know whether I'd bother with a new or expensive car. I think I'll stick with the old "muppet bus" (delica). This way I don't have to bother taking it to the panel repairs if it gets a scratch on it etc. At the shopping centre, if someone opens thier door against my car, I really don't care, it's just a car.

Yo Adolf. I've got enough Porsche blood in me to feel that my comment may hold some weight here. My dad has a room dedicated to 911s, ask him anything. I've got a friend that works in Weissach. I've personally put a '77 Carrera 30m down a cliff (video is somewhere).

Be aware that the Cayenne is actually a VW Toureg is actually an Audi Q7!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Touareg

But seriously splash out on a car for your mid-life crisis. DO IT! Pick the right one and it won't devalue, may even go up. You could put your money in the stock market and watch it trickle away, or enjoy the time you have on this earth.

Perhaps get an old 911 for the near psychic steering response, and the just-when-you-least-expect-it oversteer. ~$40k. If you master it nothing in a car is as satisfying as throttle steering a 911. Nothing. (obviously I didn't master it). Ask Richard Hammond.

911s are fully galvanised since...the 70's?. Can put salty boards on the roof.

If you can't decide just get them all, one-at-a-time! You only risk the cost of registration each time.

I keep finding myself looking at Maseratis.

Want to but a car that I'll enjoy and may quite possibly go up in value - Mid 80s Porche 911 Carreara's also seems very appealing.

If you want a luxury 4x4 that can actually go offroad there is only one choice RANGE ROVER but who wants to put bush pinstriping on a Rangie

If you want a 4x4 you will actually want to take off road there are only two choices PATROL or LANDCRUISER ( you can add JK Jeeps to this list if you dont mind waiting for parts in remote locations )

X5s, Tourags, Cayennes, ML's ect.......are pathetic offroad poor approach and departure angles plastic bumpers and vitals that hang below chassis rails.

If its a cafe cruiser 4x4 I would still go the Range Rover the interiors are pimp and they have far more cudos that an X5 or Cayenne which are bogan luxos

Cayenne etc, usually have low profile tyres too, you can take stuff all air out before they will come of the rims.

Shame Toyota don't make the 4 runner anymore.

If it were me, I would buy something that I could use and enjoy. I'm more of a classic fan myself. So would be a nice 55 - 57 chev wagon or similar.

There is a nice 60 caddi coupe going cheap on gumtree in perth... not sure if the seats fold down in the back though, but the boot is massive.

I don't think you will get any money back on a porsche suv, I think they will keep going down in value until about $15000 where they will then just keep getting resold for similar money to people who want to own a porsche, much like the Porsche 924.

At the same time... it's only money and if you want it, buy it :) You should still get roughly half your money back later on when you want something else.

Piss losers like Log Man off with this... $40k new

Water repellent seats = NO more getting changed when going for a bite... after doing whatever u do in the sea.

You know when you're stuck in traffic and you can't turn around cos there's a high'ish lane divider, and you're scared of farking the bottom and steering alignment?

Sorry Adolf... but in my book there's only one thing worse than a new Cayenne, and that's someone rolling around in an old Cayenne.

Not only does it say "tool who wants to impress" but also "not rich enough to buy a new one". It's the worst of both worlds. In the UK they are cheap as chips these days because second-hand ones have such a stigma attached to them and cost so much to run (check www.ebay.co.uk)

Don't buy a Cayenne, please.

Range Rover would be ideal, but if you actually want something that you can take offroad, get a Discovery 3 HSE.

Leather interior, shed loads of toys and options, incredible off road, immensely comfortable (they are, afterall, basically a Range Rover Sport) and then spec it with an ARB bar and some lightforce. No-one will ever pull out in front of you again.

A mate has one and I love borrowing it. Awesome car.

They handle extremely well and both the TD and V8 have got insane amounts of torque.

I'd have one in a heartbeat.

PS -
Also, to anyone who reckons that a second-hand 911 may go up in value.... Only certain Porsches hold their value, so you've got to get the exact right model at the exact right time in their depreciation curve. In addition, you've GOT to be prepared to do the work yourself.

Old Porsches need new parts just like anything else. Parts are NOT cheap and the labour costs associated with a garage you'd actually trust to do the work are astronomical. I can speak from experience here as I've had a 993 and still own a 944 in the UK. I spent a lot of money on the 993 and I've spent a lot of time getting the tools on the 944.

They are awesome cars, but be prepared that it is going to cost you money to play in that pool.

Lots of good suggestions. I don't think the Cayenne will happen, it was just this passing drunken thought I had, when I first saw that I could actually afford one.

Those newer Toyota cruisers look good - probably would like to take one for a test drive. I also want to take a 2005 BMW 530D out also.

Getting back to finding a car that appreciates or holds its value. It would be good to get a car that goes up in value instead of down. My mum owned a 60s Mercedes convertible which appreciated over the 5 years she had it. There were no big costs or issues with that.

At the risk of going all over the place with this thread - do you reckon a 2002 - 2004 Monaro will appreciate? You can pick up a good one for around $22K

This car would tick all the boxes.

As a bonus there is plenty of space in the boot to take all those unsold airswimmers to the tip.

Hardly. He wanted fast, handling and ability to carry SUPs.

Now looking at a 911?

EDIT (I see Adolph removed the wishlist of features he wanted like carryign a SUP and now it is just a midlife crisis car)
