I think I'm having yet another mid life crisis. Only a few years ago I used to think anyone who drove these cars were complete wankers - they probably are.

Now I'm finding myself searching out for them on carsales.com.au. I think they have dropped in price enough and will hold their value pretty well - but I'm no depreciation or car expert.

I may grow a goatie, put my long grey hair into a pony tail, start smoking a pipe and become one of the people I despise this weekend.

Why?

get a 2y/o Falcon wagon (to put ya gear in)

add an XR6 turbo motor, G6E leather interior, lowered, mags, tint.

Easily in your 40K and fun fun fun

No. I'm a low maintenance car guy. I just want the regular services. I've owned a BMW 530i for years. It's a beautiful specimen and I still love that car immensely, but lately I've been toying with the idea of an upgrade.

I only drive weekends, but enjoy regularly driving it very long distances in total comfort.

Ford vs Porsche -You gotta be kidding. Adolf, you only live twice - time to live for your dreams. Word of warning - the first generation Tuaregs and Cayennes (same platform) are notoriously unreliable, mostly due to electric problems (first full CAN bus implementation for VW). Very expensive to maintain. Can provide plenty details if you decide to go this way.

I would spend $40k on something new(ish), plenty of stuff that appeals to me at this pricepoint....

A Porsche Cayenne is a nothing car. Not a sedan, and no performance for the price compared to others, plus no good offroad. Whye spend a bucketload ona half-arsed fourby, or if you don't wanna go offroad it is not quick / doesn't handle.

Every time something goes wrong the parts are horrendously priced and there is no aftermarket available. Tyres will cost a mint.

I agree on something newish as you said, but not the Ford vs Porsche comment when we are talking $40K area

Thanks for the heads up. The last thing I want is a car off the road due to technical issues and glitches. Maybe I was lucky with my BMW. Nothing has gone bad with that in over 6 years. I heard the early model BMW X5's, X3's were not that good, that's why I haven't gone for them.

I've narrowed down what I want:

a reliable prestige car
f'ck off status
preferably german engineering
will carry my sup on the roof
has got above average handling, acceleration, accessories
will tour two people in total comfort for up to four hours at a time.
be a pleasure to drive.

Everybody I know that has Cayenne experience comments how thirsty/and expensive they are.
If its comfort/offroad Rangie is hard to beat.Like driving around in your loungeroom.
I have owned a fair few of them and yes they have cost me a bunch , however the petrol heads I talk to now reckon 2006 tdv6 onwards are unbelievably good value and chipped , very quick also.
There is a reason Clarkson rates them as the best car on the planet.No change from 50k though.

Might be nice to drive, but having seen Clarkson and the other two clowns try and 4WD thru south america I would not believe anything they had to say about fourbies.
Wanna 4WD, buy a Patrol or Cruiser
Wanna drive a loungechair, buy a BMW/Merc

DON'T buy a patrol (pootrol) I bought new one last year they are crap bits falling off, vibration problems, crook tyre wear, rust (even with so called rust treatment and electronic rust prevention) etc etc. Absolute rubbish and Nissan don't want to know about it just lie to you and try to sweep it under the carpet.

Wish I had got a Toyota or something not a nissan

Also pre2007 pootrolls engines regularly put holes in pistons and blow up

So steer clear of them especially

You are probably right, however, while I'm still alive I want to feel that I'm not doing a second best thing, besides, I don't want to get the big C and die in a few years and leave my family with a Subaru.

I myself am not a fan of the cayenne. Reason being I reckon Porsche should stay with what they know best... Sports cars! Putting a modified 911 nose on an SUV just looks a bit weird in my opinion. I find the audi Q7, Q5 or even the new Q3 a much more classy option.

It does actually handle exceptionally well - drives like a good sportscar. Even Clarkson admits it is an engineering marvel, although I'm not sure this is such a useful endorsment, because they are indeed clowns

It's only semi-bad offroad - the standard tyres are of course only good for driving on the beach. The pneumatic suspension can be jacked up a lot, and has a good amount of travel. Too bad the wheel alignment has to be fixed after each offroad trip.

Adolf, I think a post-facelifted (2006 or later) manual diesel X3 will fit your "specification" for German engineering, prestige and good reliability at the pricepoint.

yeah they won't come cheap that's for sure. Worth every penny though! Never used to like range rovers much but this one is just phenomenal!

I had the opportunity to drive one (and an S4 Avant, M3, Audi TT v6 in about 3 days) The RS4 blew my mind as to just how friggen awesome it was... and my previous rides were CBR900RRs

Just pure awesome... But if I had to have one... S4 Avant with the donk sorted to RS spec... cause the suspension on the RS is like solid tyres and bricks for shockies.

or maybe an S6... ooooo V10 lambo goodness under the bonnet

Agree. For anyone into watersports and going away it is the total shazzizlesh!t or whatever you homeboys say nowadays.
I'd also add a decent stereo (the speakers can't overcome the road noise unfortunately) and carpet (will assist with former also

) and add a gas conversion. Diesel/gas is fkn awesome: cleaner burning, more power and less fuel use. Anything that can fit a fridge with 30 cans of grog in the centre console fopr easy access with ease, is designed for australia. What's not to like?

(But serious question for adolph: carrying any watersports gear is lowest priority right? You want handling, power, and different / looks flash?)

Nope! A 911 Turbo maybe, or a 935, or a 908, or the absolute ultimate; a 917, but a Cayenne has none of that.

As for Ford vs Porsche; what about GT40? Right up there with a 917

You forgot to mention the automatic steering column mounted drop down dick suck machine.

You don't really want another car. What you really want is a bigger dick. Make sure it is painted black too. Ideal colour for the Aussie climate.

It's a pity we get a such a **** choice of cars here because if I lived in the US and had 40K to spend i'd straight up buy one of these.

Nothing says **** you and **** the environment of 6.2L of Detroit muscle in basically a road going stadium truck, like a bawse
