To begin , RIP to the latest crew.

My idea is as follows .

Send Australian vessels to a nominated port .

Load all that wish to come to the lucky country , with the following proviso . Here's the catch

You will work in nominated projects for bugger all wages for six years, we will feed and house you , and not kill you. You will work your arse off and actually help create / run some infrastructure that will benefit the community as a whole . Say... build/ run market gardens , build dams, build water recycling plants , build solar power plants , buid/renovate schools , hospitals , very fast trains, nth sth pipelines east west fing whatever's

six years after your start date , you are free to start your own business , get a job on normal wages or apply for the dole ( good luck with that one or the pension in the the future !!!)

If you want you may even purchase shares in bilabong !!

Here's an idea - kinda left-field I know and I am sure a bit controversal, but :

How about the Government, maybe HAVE A POLICY, any policy that is other than 'it is our policy to not upset Bob Brown'

Sands, your list of projects you want to put your slaves to work on is what they would do if you just let them in in the normal fashion. Maybe we could make them all cut cane like the knaks then just turf them out when it suited us. But my big problem with your idea is, why the resentment, why the punishment, why wreck these peoples lives even more than they have been already? We've always had boat people, my neighbors are from Vietnam, did they get the same treatment that you propose?

Would not work even if you had the Global Political will to do it because to run it would involve government. If we can't get pink batts right how the hell could they achieve anything so complicated.

There is a permanent fix to the refugee problem but it is the proverbial Jumbo in the room. Virtually all refugees are people trying to leave third world countries where western commercial interests have supported corrupt governments. In most cases they have actually installed corrupt dictators. The list is so long it is downright embarrasing and yet we spend so much time on this forum venting about the symptoms of this disease without ever thinking about addressing the cause.

I watched a great piece of investigative journalism on SBS a while back. It was about the use of slave labour by the Mugabe government, policed by his military, in mining a recently discovered diamond mine. When they get wore out they simply shoot them and get some more.

Now do you hear any of those lilly livered sell out bastards in Canberra making a noise about this and all of Bobs other atrocities? Of course you don't!

Why not? Well it is a little inconvenient when you have a look at Australian mining interests in Zimbabwe, so we keep hush.

And then we wonder why there are people leaving Zimbabwe and making for our shores.

Look to the cause to find a solution.

You can bet your bottom dollar that there is going to be a huge influx of Libyans soon, those who can piece together the wherewithal to get away now that their country has been made unliveable by Nato.

But these workers by law must be paid the "award wage" for that industry, + superannuation, have the correct OH&S conditions, meal breaks, and time off, they must hold the "correct" competency and trade qualifications for insurance and legal liabilities for the companies engaging them....etc,etc,etc.

Its the industrial rules and regulation that have killed this country... but mind you without them many companies would be killing workers.

Immigration is being used as means to mongrelize the population.

Breed out [historical] resistance in other words to tptb.

Look at the countries where this immigration is pushed.

Future generations, majority going to be mongrel.

Don't know why you bother Loggy.

It seems that people show their true colors when they aren't talking about how awesome motorbikes are.

This will be another debate that will go nowhere but it will, again, show us how bigoted and ignorant some people on this site really are. that's something I guess.

Because i'm against any immigration into Britain or Australia, fail to see how this makes me a bigot, especially as my best friend is from India.

Not ignorant, just see an alterior motive in gov't immigration policy.

Always thought that the surge in immigration was simply a tentative to support the aging population. Knee-jerk reaction for the failure by all Western gov'ts to make the link between the falling birth rate and "who will support the older guys - quick, we have to bring new people in, like, any".

In fact, I thought it came out just like that from the mouths of Hawke and Keating at the time when it all started. Is there any other motive??

I'd rather focus on enculturing them to the Aussie ways. To be honest, once these guys step on our shores, they're just like you and me nothing more or less. My annoyance is the amount of them whom continue to follow their own cultures and not embrace ours. There is a balance that must be struck between respecting where you came from and embracing where you are. Is it really that difficult to speak english? Or what about being narrow minded and thinking your way of life or traditions are right compared to others?

Aussies are about giving each other a go and and embracing eachother and having a good time IMO.

To those who might now consider me a racist or discriminating, I hope some background information should let you decide. My parents are immigrants. We were lucky to come here and they have just as much embraced the aussie way of life as they have tried to hold onto their own tradition There have been countless times I have been given the 'You're *ethnic background*, we don't belong in the water (or play footy or etc etc etc)'. My reply has always been 'No, I'm not *ethnic background*, I'm an Aussie'. Hasn't held me in great stead but this is who I am. The sooner we focus on this, the sooner we stop situations such as race riots years ago on the Queensland beaches or religions wanting to have their separate judicial system compared to our justice system.

You come here for a better living, better money and food? Then embrace our culture. That should be the focus. Not on how to get rid of these people.

Making them earn their place in our society is a great idea.

Ooops!! Sorry we live in a global community now don't we so we must all equalise (down of course) to the common denominator.

Why??

Because we are white skinned exploiters of the poorer people with darker complexion and we must now allow them to drag us down to their level but us helping them up to our level is definetly not allowed.

If you question immigration,then you're a racist.

If you question 119,then you're with the terrorists.

If you question the holocaust,2-3 years in the nick!

the fact that people on all sides of this debate seem unable to separate immigration and race issues mean we will never have meaningfull population debate.
we are all people we are all equal and we are all over the bl**dy place

That was a nice post, newguy, considering you've lived the situation. That topic has gotta be close to the bone for you.

Having said that, the onus should be on the newcomers, not the society that welcomes them.
If they don't wanna, it won't happen. That's why many stick out both visually or culturally (not only language) 10 years later - they just won't do it, it wasn't the intention. Their kids may, not them.

Don't forget many immigrants are 'pushes', not 'pulls'. They didn't come here to embrace Australian values from a happy place. They came here from internal pressure, it's a forced move (economic, political, religious). Anyways for many Australia happens to be the place that took them in from 5 countries they applied for. Coulda been England or Canada or Denmark, but it happened to be here.

So the only way we can stop people drowning in bad boats is to implement a forced labour scheme... You said," We will feed you, and not kill you". That sounds like a forced labour camp to me. I spose to stop these people from drowning at sea we could send that ship, as you suggested to a port ,as you suggested pick them up, bring them to Australia, process them, deport the ones who are not desireable and keep the rest. There then, that would stop the drownings at sea that you seem sssoooooo concerned about. So why the labour camp , why the "you will work on this project" . Why the "we will not kill you" crap. Why the need to turn us into concentration camp guards. Why the attitude to these people. My guess is fear of people coming to Australia by boat, Fear of Asians, Fear of Brown people, Fear of Muslims, Fear of being invaded. Fear. **** fear!

I agree with newguy. I'm a "foreigner" too.. I moved here 4 months ago.
I'm starting uni in february, and hope to apply for a permanent visa after I finished, but in order to live here I am improving my english, and learning about local general culture.Actually, the main reason I came here is because I didn't like some parts of the italian lifestyle, so I came here to have a different one.

I wouldn't even think about saying "my roots are italian, let's change THIS place to make it more similar to my home country", so I'm even more shocked when I see people that apparently believe that (substitute italian with any random heritage).

I mean, it's not rocket science: you choose to travel to a place-> you get informed about the habits, the culture in there -> you adapt to it OR you choose another country

Of course, some immigrants don't come because they want to change life, they are forced. But then I think adapting to the lifestyle of a new country is still way better than living in a war zone, so that should be the decent thing to do..

EDIT: except for vegemite. Guys, that thing can't be edible, seriously...

So who is going to be the person to make sure that new arrivals 'adhere' or 'assimilate'
in our society. will there be a culture police? isn't that the reason a lot of asylum seekers leave their home?

I experienced the same situation and I agree 200% with you! When I came I made the effort and tried my best to join the OZ community and life style! You guys welcomed me and helped me and I will be grateful forever, It make me very upset to see a lot of free loaders coming under false refugee status (queue jumping ) and as soon as they are in doing their best to sabotage the best life style in the world! I even enjoy some vegemite from time to time!
