In other news, Australian literacy levels are up the creek.

So all you forum lurkers who can't spell and hide behind your username, get a life [}:)].

Saturday rant over.

nah I'm with you mate. Don't know why you are so concerned about it when its not the field of work you are specifcially in.

This is what is has always been like, with the years 3, 5 and 7 testing also. There is general improvement overall, but then education needs much much much more funding that what it is given. I don't seen WHY its NOT a priority when its Australia's future!!!

I could 'rant' on about this for days like u Pat. Don't you worry. People these days, even if they ARE literate, tend to be slack and use slang and poor grammar in the midst of looking 'cool' and like the 'younger population', however, the example of poor grammar to the younger people - is such a disadvantage. It is not however, solely this!

The year 3 literacy levels and also the comparison between indigenous and non-indigenous students. http://education.qld.gov.au/students/advocacy/equity/gender-sch/docs/abit-literacy.doc

people say that indigenous people don't want to learn, its more about students at this age not having teachers who can cater to their learning styles and needs. Basing lessons solely for non-indigenous Australians as THEY are the majority as well as being seen as more hard working and appreciated. Stupid.
Compare teaching indigenous students vs. 'gifted or special students'. A general teacher would focus solely on what the gifted student needed as to them, they are 'above average' or require extra levels of work to complete. The indigenous student however is NOT seen as this due to stupid stereotypes! in my opinion, teachers who do this (and this is a majority unfortunately) should NOT be teaching! We try to teach our students and children about bias and stereotypes, however, it is pointless with examples people make....

As WELL as in numeracy where there should always be a concrete link between materials - symbols - language until high school, however by around year four-five the materials are removed due to students should already 'know' what to do and the expectations on them have increased. The use of materials in mathematics through until high school allows a concrete understanding for students, and having authentic purposeful tasks and assessment is what MATTERS, not working through a pointless math book just to meet your (the teachers) needs!!!!...

I'm concerned because I was brought up by my mother, who is a teacher-librarian, to believe that literacy is of the utmost importance. So it's just part of my beliefs, hence the ongoing concern for the general public and internet forum users.

Thats true Pat. People also take for granted the amount of education we have and how fortunate we actually are! To me, the best thing, is having a classroom with Sudanese and African students who truly appreciate education, literacy, numeracy, and can help others students understand how fortunate we really are!

.... Ungrateful youth of today [}:)]

i have 4 identities, all of them are me and spread out over 10 web sites differing only because of the different topic of the website. obviously im not going to put up the 100% true info so identity harvesting software can rape my bank accounts ect.

if you think the Internet is safe and you can put your true id on it then your setting yourself up to fail... having said that they are myspace+face book, youtube, 4 kiting forums, 2 bike forums and photos but i only use 4 of them

o ****... im exactly what they said, its me and kitecrazzy [zz didnt get email to activate until like 1 month late]

haha neither were 100% correct. It should be 'one is married with children' to be 100% precise lol

Dave- A little to paranoid with your identity and such mate. If you just go about your way with good reasoning and not letting out TOO much, I don't see that much of a reason to be as worried as you

I've just been getting into that 'Advance Australia... Where?' book and it seems that men are still recovering from the feminist revolution (not to mention the women). They tried being SNAGs and then Metrosexuals, but neither seem to have worked. Apparently the men who will be having offspring in the future are the 'New Blokes'. This New Bloke seems like quite a character, but I haven't finished the book yet so I'm not 100% on how it's supposed to work yet.

lol Pat! Well carn you!

Apart from the WA part of it, you have met EVERY criteria !

This is getting a little... well.... interesting if I say so myself!

It may be a running joke or it may-not be. Some are a good quality to have a guy obviously! Others (aka Navara) are just fun!

mmmm... Seems like you win all but 1 criteria pat! You must move to Qld permanently!
