Got up at some ungoldy hour, on the road by 5.30. made it to Strahan in time to meet the chopper pilot at 10.00 (slow diesel van), but chopper pilot is in Melbourne. WTF Call the chopper company boss, he also says WTF. He's in Wynyard in a meeting, says he'll drive down after the meeting and do the job around 3.00. Great I think, it's blowing constant 25 Knts, but bitterly cold (only brought a t-shirt with me - derrr), so I think I'll go for a drive out to Macquarie Heads for a look and maybe wet a line while I wait for the sun to warm things up a bit. At the end of the gravel road the sign said 4WD Only, no problems I thought and locked the hubs and slipped it into 4WD. Just about at the beach and I'm thinking about how good a 4WD van is, when the sand got softer and I got high centered. 4wd is good, but not if the wheels can't reach the ground. No-one else around, so spend an hour or so trying to dig sand out from under the van, jacking it up and putting sticks under the wheels, but jack keeps sinking. Eventually thought bugger, and walked back until I found a shackowner with a big (proper) 4wd and a stout rope. Anyway by the time I get back to town it's time to wait for the pilot, who eventually turns up. He and the technician fly off to do the job, an estimated 2 hrs. I go windsurfing. The 25Knts is down to 15 now, and looking dodgy. I quickly rig and get in the water just as it drops to a gusty 10 knts max. Wobble along, a gust comes, speed up a bit and crash into a big log just under the water, chipping my fin. Give up in disgust. The technician didn't fifish the job until 8.00, chopper gets back at 8.30, leave Strahan at 9.00. Heading up the highlands is way foggy, the roads chockers full of wobblies, potaroos, quolls, wombats possums etc, doing about 10kmh and playing dodge the mammal. Got to Derwent Bridge about 11.30, the pubs open so decide to stay there the night. Did some trout fishing on the way back this morning, lost 2 lures and didn't catch anything.
Not buying a lotto ticket this weekend!
