Someone wise referred to spectator sport as 'the opiate for the masses'
Cricket would have to be THE second most boring sport to watch behind F1 Hot Air Balloon racing. If you enjoy it, good.

And cricket would have to be the most efficient opiate of all spectator sports. What other game goes on for five days and holds a significant portion of the nation in suspended animation.

Every year when footy pre-season comes around, theres a group of us boys down at the local footy club plugging away getting fit and ready for the season. Sure we may not be the best nor the slickest, but we give it a go. With that you gain the respect of everyone at your club as you finish your last 1.5km set. With that you join the boys for a drink or so after trainings. The coaches on our club will no matter what, find a position on the team for these guys. Sure maybe they'll get less game time, but they'll still play and at the end of the season it is these players that push the rest to maintain a high standard in training, playing and just as much off the season partying.

When you say the competition is not a struggle, have you played on a losing side where you will yourself with everything you got to keep at it? Have you continued playing with an injured leg just cos the team needs you? Have you willed yourself to keep running, to drag your team out of a slump and win that tight game of narrowist of margins? I don't think you can consider us a 'bunch of rich guys poncing around a paddock'.

What I'm saying mate, is like the others, if you've never played nor been part of a club before, then you don't understand what its like. At the same time, you have to love the game (each person, there own passion). I know that when I step onto the field on that sat arvo, I'm willing to put my body on the line cos I know my mates just as much will do the same.

Isnt that all about tight shorts,patting each other on the bum and long group showers after the game?
LOL, just mucking around
All should be encouraged to play team sports as kids.

What do you think World of Warcraft is for?
Thousands of kids worldwide, young and old, all plugging away furiously on a keyboard.

"Muuuuumm,... Bathroom!" (quote--- Southpark)
here, you might have forgot.

hahaha, nothing wrong with sharing the love, its what makes the world go round ;)
but honestly, team sports such as these does teach alotta life lessons to the kids who play. You learn about teamwork, respect, cooperation/ working as a team and not to mention you make mates for life.

What about the USA Female Lingerie Football League (NFL) !!

So Gorgo, I assume you never saw;
Gary Ablett Snr leap snatch a ball out of the sky. Or see him kick a goal from 70m out, on the run.

Or;
Gary Ablett Jnr, Chris Judd, and Ben Cousin cut through midfield packs, seemingly covered in teflon....

Or;
Gary Jnr, Eddie Betts, Stevie Johnson, & Cyril Rioli run around opponents, hard on the boundary line, and kick a freakish goal....

It's elite sport, like pro surfing is elite sport, and like Nat Young & Joel Tudor are elite longboarders, and Laird & Dave Kalama and Kai Lenny are elite SUP Board Riders.

Watching elite sport is pretty good, especially after the sun has gone down, not much else to do, and beer in hand !!

Regarding payments, Aussie sports people are not highly paid, in the grand scheme of things. Some of them will struggle in the so called real world. Also, the "elite" business people are actually more highly paid. But at about 33yrs, their AFL life is ending, and they will often need to reinvent themselves. Some do this easily, others don't.

Happy New Years everyone !!
Cheers.

Aahhh...Rugby (union)....what a great way to spend a bit of time on land with your mates enjoying some nice cruisey beers.

The tackles. The runs. The strategy. The game.
Rugby has it all...including one thing that almost no other mainstream team sport has. RESPECT. Respect for the captains and most importantly, respect for the Referees.

Rugby, a thug's game played by gentleman. Soccer, a gentleman's game played by thugs.
