If you run into anything that key is going to end up in a very uncomfortable place!!

I am considering at a second hand rig for CAN$300.00. With a lower profile tyre these can push a 17kg DH bike + 80kg rider along a flat paved road at 40kph. I figure it could push my 10 kg XC bike and me @ 72kg along at 50kph pretty comfortably

Sounds like a mozzie attacking your arse. Not exceptionally efficient either. And I'd imagine it'd burn a hole through your back pack.

Let us know how you go

Correct about $1000.00 (plus freight/insurance etc to WA) however I am looking at a used rig that is for sale on a Canadian site.

shuttlebuddy has a really cool form factor... but 2 stroke engine? They're REALLY loud.

If only it had an electric motor, with the battery where the fuel tank is + a wireless remote accelerator.

The battery + motor would add a fair amount of weight the roller <> tyre contact point.

Loud like "chainsaw loud" . At least the pedestrians would hear it coming

To compliment this I could buy the Zounds air powered bicycle horn that punches out 115-120 decibles of pig squeals*. These things are "brown note" loud. They even have a military like switch system with a safety cover that you flip up prior to straffing your target with pig squeals*

*not actually pig squeals, but I would like to see some R&D that could make this happen

Good point about starting a fire in my back pack due to hot exhaust.......I didn't actually give this much thought. Thankyou for the heads up

Not really "comfortably".
The speed limitation is largely due it not having any gears. In other words, you're always stuck in first gear. And you need that to be fairly low otherwise you can't get up any hills. So the speed limit is mostly determined by the rev limit.
It would go a bit faster with a lighter load but I don't think you would cruise at 50km/hr.
And as already said, if you did it would sound like a mozzie attacking you're ass. That's mozzie, not moozie. They would sound different.

The Slingshop - the reclined electric trike. Aussie invention / concept.

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/newinventors/txt/s2868444.htm

If something done already a hundred or thousand times still could be called inventions

Yeah, I know. That's why I used the word "concept". It is unique in a few ways though... Ultra light weight, with a shell, 2kW of power, and able to de-tune it down to the legal 200W limit.

It depends what you want to do .ive had motorbikes but for what i use my electric bike for i prefer it over a motorbike as i prefer to stay off busy roads ,can pick it up and carry it up stairs and over our railway bridge and can lean it up against the place that i want to go to .it is definitely more convenient than a car and even a motorbike .i also pedal assist which means i am getting more ecercise than a motorbike plus it is quiet and i can hear cars trucks and busses more easily and avoid being run down by them .

I agree Mr Float... Electric Bikes will be a big part of our future...

I can imagine a day, not too far away (20 years?), when Petrol is Triple the current price (related to earnings).

If you spend $50 per week on petrol for your commute... Turn that into $150 (triple)... Or the option might be, ride your electric bike for 3-5 days per week, and recharge it at your desk with your boss's electricity! Weekly fuel bill is drastically reduced.
