Have spent most of my life working in jobs that at one stage or another required a higher level of fitness than your average joe. After all these years of being bashed, smashed, pummelled and broken ( and that was just the recreation side of things ) all the advice about keeping active - regardless of what it is that floats your boat - is spot on. Especially training your brain to commit. And do yourself a favour and try to stay away from the pain killer pills and chems. Drink plenty of water, eat veggies (bucket loads of em') and look up the benefits of natures anti inflammatory wonder spice TUMERIC !!! Friggin brilliant stuff. My current gig means I have to keep up with the 'kids' half my age on the fitness side and coupled with the occasional bashing, if it wasn't for the daily tumeric and coconut oil kick start every day before breakfast, I couldn't bend down to pull my boots on let alone do what I have to do for a crust. Best tip of all, just dont stop moving pal, use it or lose it !!!

I took up racing bicycles at 51. only D grade but 2.5 years later almost won a 75km handicap race. sprint finishat 55kph. Im loving the races of about 50-60kms manage a 15km ride each day before breakfast and go to work feeling limbered up both physically and mentally. I suspect the mental bit is more important that people realize

Are you boasting about almost winning a race against handicaps...?

bloody oath! I started racing when others of my age retired.. My grade usually breaks up by mid race so its me and the bike against an organized group of younger riders working together. When it is satisfying to even finish almot winning feels awesome. a win isa win.
the handicapping is very carefully calculated based on the latest performance stats available to the club on each individual rider and altered to account for a particular road and conditions. If you don't put in your best effort on the day you will gt smoked. the handicapper can predict race times and finish gaps to within minute by the end of the season
