I would say that it is built that far underground to provide a stable environment to get decent results. There is less background electrical noise, less rf noise, better temperature stability etc. There are a few experimental facilities that have been built underground like that, especially when the data to be gathered is very hard to get. From memory I think neutrino detectors are built deep underground too.

In response to Grinch, I believe the 27 Kilometre tunnel crosses the border of Sweden and Switzerland.

If its so safe, why the hell is it 100 metres underground ?????

User
Sweden is right up in the North. About 1000km from Switzerland.
Now that would be an impressive tunnel.

Ok,Ok !!

I am not to hot on the Geography!

But the tunnel does cross a border of two countries.

In response to those suggesting that it is underground because of the space, that's rubbish !

There are plenty of areas of unused space where it could have been built.

Yes rubbish , everyone knows they built it underground because the alien consultants on the project are susceptible to Ultra voliet radiation from our earth sun, gheez come on people, think.

My question is - Why do we need to know?

I'm quite happy not knowing what I don't know (which is quite a lot!!!)

If this contraption (sorry, sounded like my grandfather there for a minute) does what it is meant to do.......and we do find out what we don't now know......and we don't like what we find out, and suddenly know.......it'll be too late!!!

Because we'll have no way of unknowing what we now know, which, of course is what we didn't know before.....

.......still with me?

Which now ponders the question......

Why are you even reading this dribble? Obviously I have no idea what I'm talking about!

If anybody has more time than me, this is supposed to be very good:

""Rock-star physicist" Brian Cox talks about his work on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Discussing the biggest of big science in an engaging, accessible way, Cox brings us along on a tour of the massive project."

because he's not smart either?
he made up a load of rubbish that is impossible to prove but if elements of it don't work out it can be modified ad infinitum.
Assumptions at the start of his theories are pretty broad
