Well, if anyone watches the news tonight, they would have seen that bloody massive science experiment in Sweden that they have started tonight.

Some particle accelerator, called a LHC, speeds up protons and collides them into one another. Now im no scientist, but some people, sceptics, yes, believe that the collision will cause a black hole, which will eat Earth from the inside out.

Pretty wild stuff if you ask me. Just thought you all might like to know.

Happy rest of your life for 54 minutes. Supposed to collide at 8:00pm EST. Lets hope **** doesnt happen.

When the first nuclear bombs were designed, the scientists were seriously worried that it would create a runaway reaction and destroy the earth.

They just shrugged their shoulders and got on with it...

There's no chance this will create a black hole, if it did then it would just evaporate before it did any damage. Black holes need a certain amount of mass to be stable, the mass of a couple of hadrons running around a big racetrack is nowhere even close to that.

But still...

ok ok, everyone just settle down. Its now 9:02, and im writing this, so all is STILL well up in sunny Queensland. No black holes to report of. Well, I suppose, there is still Inala.

Merry xmas!

Wow have they built one in Sweden aswell? I know they've built one in Switzerland.
Where in Sweden is it?

well Lemo sorry to disappoint but

(1) the colliding will not happen tonight, it will take a long time to get the machine dialled in and actually produce a collision. Sorry guys it may create blackholes next week or month, if at all

(2) smarter people than all of us say that any black hole created will last for a fraction of a second and be destroyed by the same process that created it

Isn't that thing COOL.

Hope its not a fizzer. I'd hate to hear them trying to justify the expense and effort in five years time. One hopes they'll be swimming in new data and maybe have a few clues about the truth - maybe find the Higgs boson, ooohhh.

In response to Grinch, I believe the 27 Kilometre tunnel crosses the border of Sweden and Switzerland.

If its so safe, why the hell is it 100 metres underground ?????

Crikey. Bugger the black holes. Now I'm more worried about the threat of war if Sweden and Switzerland have a common border. Must be a few (former) countries in between that must be mighty pssd off. Did they invade overnight?

Yeah.
Us Europeans decided we had enough countries and it was becoming confusing so we amalgamated Denmark and Germany into Switzerland

I'm sure even with it 100m underground your tinfoil hat won't save you from the blackholes that are coming to get you.

Its just simple logistics, where you gonna find space above ground to build a 27km long circular tunnel? I imagine that being 100m underground also means that its on a more stable platform.

all this stress for the world and I've read one of the scientists saying "once we have compiled all the data from a successful collision we hope to be confused on a higher level"...great....

I read somewhere the chances of a collision that actually gives us what we want is very low.
Woudln't it be wicked if they do find something that totally reverses everything we think now.

The latest from the Sydney Morning Herald.

"
When all is ready, the LHC will whizz two parallel beams, one clockwise and the other anticlockwise, around the tunnel at up to 11,000 laps per second before steering them into collisions into four chambers whose walls are swathed with detectors.

The first collisions are likely to start in several weeks, but only next year will the LHC be cranked up to its full capacity of 14 teraelectronvolts - a massive amount of energy - or seven times the record held by Fermilab. "

The protons have only done one lap so far, so there's a lot of tweaking to be done before they get a high speed bullseye. By which time we'll have forgotten all about this and get swallowed up in a microsecond without warning.

Higgs Bosen, gotta love the names anyway will be great if they find that, then learn what binds different densities of matter together, and hey presto they invent a teleportation system ...cool.
Beam me up Scotty.
But if they actually create anti-matter then were all in for an interesting couple of seconds.
If it was going to be a disasterous outcome I'm sure the aliens would come and warn us, not to mess around with it.

i have a theory, before the big bang and the universe was created... a scientist on a planet was using a contraption to see how the big bang happened..... hope its second, third or forth time lucky eh.

to be politically incorrect, watching Stephen Hawkings on the news say,

"nothing bad would happen as this event occurs everyday in the universe"

.. well... physics didn't do him any good did it! Maybe we will be turned inside out.

Yeh watched Stephen Hawkins on the news and thought what would a scientist say? In this situation they usually figure out the odds and decide whether to preserve reputation and go public on the higher probability option or risk it all and go for the glory by picking the outside chance. In this case there's no glory to be had by going for the "all swallowed up in a black hole scenario", it's a no brainer.

A bit strange that on one hand they say we need to spend all this money because we haven't got a clue what goes on, but then. As Steve says millions of collisions like this every day in the earth's atmosphere.... What about millions in a microsecond in the confines of the business end of the LHC? Could these mini black holes pool together? Has he heard of critical mass?? If I'm right, it's a long shot, I won't be here to say "I told you do"

Where did the money come from to build this thing?
Considering in alot of European countries you cant drink the tap water!

Once we find out how the big bang happened we'll be building another machine to work out how the thing that caused the big bang happened.

Some 12 yr old school kid somewhere probably has the answer.

Which european countries are these??

Of the 20 members of CERN you can drink the tap water in at least 16 of the contries.. Where do you get you information/prejudices from...

Most likely because that way it just requires they drill through rock, instead of having to knock down houses, roads, infrastructure etc which would be far more expensive... and considering that it doesn't have any breaks in the 'pipeline' its probably the most convenient.

I reckon its pretty exciting . We might discover something awesome .

Ok,Ok !!

I am not to hot on the Geography!

But the tunnel does cross a border of two countries.

In response to those suggesting that it is underground because of the space, that's rubbish !

There are plenty of areas of unused space where it could have been built.
