Eddie and the 12 year old could possibly attend the same racial vilification course together...Who ever would have thought this could happen.

I always thought of him as a complete d..k head, he has just proved that, with his latest comments on his morning show .
Absolutely unbelievable after the weekend situation.

Yep , spot on .

Step down from all your media gigs Eddie , stick with being a collingwood supporter , that,s your lot.

It's ironic that the tool to his success, his mouth, has led, to his public humiliation. He is a victim of his own success with all his exposure and his subsequent statement that his tiredness made him do it.... Thankfully reading this post I'm not the only one tired of Eddie and his opinions.
I reckon he should just go home and concentrate on being a good husband and father to his kids and shut up for a while...

I got to agree with most of you , I was teased as a kid at school cause I was the Suntanned one,!! upon a 6 mth stint at school in the UK, It was relentless from the shaved head variety, really , really white ones.
Got to the stage where I would give it back to them as much as I got ,(lucky for me there was a 6ft fence betqween us), then I had to run like sh,t to get home so as no to be flogged. Didn't care what I was called , so have to say toughen up lads it's ONLY words.
Still, Eddie needs a good anal probe

You bunch are about as bad as the media....
Who here hasnt made a joke or comment that was just in a joking maner that could have been taken as a raciest insult, even though you know your not raciest and were just makeing a joke about whats been on the media.
I think if I searched most of the regular users posts on here I could find things that could be bent into worse insults to peoples race or religon.

Lotofwind is right, the name that is.
This is about the head of an AFL club who has just apologised to a player because of a foolish statement made by a 13yr old, THEN gone and done worde himself!!
Goodes and the rest of them need to toughen up. BUT ,It's about Eddie, we are saturated with him and he goes and does this!

Racist: a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

OK much as I'm NOT a fan of Eddie I don't think he fits that description.

I do think he has made a very poor judgement call in trying to be funny about a racist issue. Not wise considering the position he has concerning said issue.

I think Adam Goodes has every right to say that it offends him... why does that make him weak i.e. comments of HTFU Goodes?

Anyway, I reckon this is one of the most interesting conversations on racism for years, it's really made me think long and hard about the issue and clearly it has for others too. That's got be a VERY good thing. I just hope we don't have Eddie to thank for that

Listening to the audio - my thought was it was deliberate - it was done to raise a larf. The self perceived state of omnipotence versus the power of the indignant social voice backed up by .... not a whole lot .... do I think this will be tomorrow's Fish & chip wrapper yep...

The statement in itself is fairly innocuous especially to a white Caucasian. To someone who has had to deal with this as a low level background noise and often worse for life it is not.

I think the punishment (as such!!) should be the same as that meated out to the 13 YO girl. One called an aboriginal footballer an ape and the other called on the same aboriginal footballer to promote .... indirectly himself in the image of ....

what a sorry and stupid saga.

The whole shebang really has highlighted how......well...dumb people can be. I mean people can't seem to understand that calling a black man.....an "ape" is a horribly racist thing. I mean FFS. NO!,..... calling a red headed man a "ranga" is NOT the same thing. That's an insult. Referring to a racial heritage in a demeaning way is what we're talking about here. The "ape" comment is saying the person is less than human, less intelligent etc etc. It's plain ugly, it's a deep, deep insult, and to see and hear people on here and elsewhere saying things like Goodes should "harden up" or "get over it" makes my blood boil. And NO! it's not the fricken same to call Ablett the milky bar kid. That completely misses the point. If anyone thinks that then they just don't understand the power relationship and history of racism. Some people need a bit of education. Its what Harry O'brien referred to "casual racism".....and boy it's alive and well here isn't it!

I don't mind Eddie. His commentary on the Olympics on Foxtell was very good. I think he is a very positive influence on sport. He made a mistake and is now getting vilified way out of proportion for it.

^^^ Suicides, bullying, discrimination, harassment - the list goes on.

As for this discussion - paddymac & log man...your comments are spot-on & represent the real issue here!

Harry O'Brien's comments carry a lot of weight & I was very impressed with the way he was able to express where the issue lays - not with the simple/stupid comment, nor the subject or target - but more the fact that it seemed to be an inherent & sub-conscious comment, with the aim of getting a laugh...using a racist slur...during the 'indigenous round'...from someone whom less than 24 hrs earlier had to address racism within his own club!?! I don't think it can be dismissed as a simple 'slip of the tongue' in this case.

As for Ed - go away! (and that's coming from a Collingwood supporter!)

How is calling someone a ranga different??
Both are insults.
Both parties were born with the supposed "defect" - a red head cant change all his hair colour any more than a black man can change his skin colour.
Both are variations on the same sub-human "theme" - Orangutan and Ape.

Is it the intent? One is often made in jest, taking the p1ss out of ginger mate, so its OK?

Weirdly enough I've never heard of 'ape' on its own used a insult against aboriginals*, now everyone has, worldwide, it has just been added to the vocabulary of everyone who never made the connection before.

*(maybe this is why most people think Goodes reaction was over the top)

Your "point" may have some validity if there were a race of redheads.....and those redheads were discriminated against over time......or they were used as slaves......bought and sold.......their lands removed from them .......their culture destroyed.......their children removed from their families to never be reunited......but no , I can't think of a red headed group that has been treated like this, can you?.......no....so?

Your comment shows you don't understand what's going on here, so maybe a rethink by you might be a good idea.

Google "the last Tasmanian" shown on ABC a couple of years ago. I dare you to watch that show and remain unchanged.

All those things are terrible but we've apologised repeatedly so isnt it time to move on? Remember and learn from history but decades on there is no need to keep complaining about it is there? Australia suffered terribly at the hands of the Japanese in WW2 (suffering on all sides) but we've moved on and we all live happily enough together.

I think it would be much better if supporters at football games were no longer able to call any players names as they might get offended. I don't care what colour they are, white, brown, grey, yellow, or pink. It's sport and this whole thing has been blown so far out of proportion its not even funny.

What a load of sh$$.

Calling someone an ape is a common and general sledge for sure, as is referring to someone as a neanderthal. I had never heard of it being a sledge specifically directed at dark skinned people before.

as an Australian with convict heritage, i find the above video insulting, racially villifying and hurtful. Due to emotional anger i may not be able to work this weekend.

Rex, the origins of aboriginals being called apes is due to scientists in the 19th and 20th centuries believing that aboriginals were the missing link in evolution between apes and humans.
