When I was last across this, about ten years ago (!), Australian companies connecting to the USA would be charged per megabyte downloaded, yet any content that anyone in the USA used from Australia was not paid for.

I don't know if this is still the case, but it changes the story a bit when one side has to pay and the other does not.

I think the USA has a much higher population and higher population density. A lot of the services we use on the Internet are based there, so it stands to reason that economies of scale, and having the services local means it is cheaper.

We have some large capacity cables from Australia to the US. Do you think the US paid to connect to us? I don't think so. I think the people that paid and built those cables probably want a return on their investment.

I used to work at a grocery store and you have no idea how much good food they throw out simply because the "expiration" date (or more like sell by or best use by), or it doesn't "look good". It really pissed me off. They don't even allow you to give away some of the stuff to people willing to take it off your hands and they even put locks on the dumpsters at night for fear of theft...stealing something that is going to be thrown away anyways. total BS

In all honesty, dumpsters are cleaner than half the restaraunts and stores we pay to get food from anyway.

Instead of living out of bins theiving your way across Australia and washing in Macdonalds, why not open a "peoples supermarket" - you have some experience?

we see plenty of leeches coming through our town just like you dextrous. They park on our verge using our limited bandwidth, sneak into the caravan park to get a free shower and leave toilet paper and rubbish in all the carparks. But by your logic I can go smash their headlights in cos there piece of crap van is worth SFA But by all means take as much rubbish from bins as you please.
ps there are many traveling around enjoying what Australia has to offer on a tight budget with much higher morals than you but they learn to forgo what they can't afford

Rather than supporting the extremes of the 'drop everything and go/stay and be miserable' mindset your mate's in, maybe get out with him for that week you can and get him to hire a camper for the week - let him test the waters of his plan with some support from you/mates. He can blow out the cobwebs, have a cry, get drunk etc without commiting to a full cut and run exercise and has the safety net of some mates to talk stuff out.
It may fuel the fire to drop out or it may just satisfy his urge to escape - either way he'd be doing with his eyes open and at least you'd feel you did something constructive to help him out...

Iworked in a large shopping centre too, I asked the manager of one of the big food retailer why they did not donate the food they were piling in the locked dumpster, the answer was that they had duty of care for the customers who were buying or receiving from the shop, if someone was given any food that could have been damaged or not fresh enough to be consumed and get sick over it the shop would be liable.
The shop baker use to leave all the bred not sold during trade out for the centre workers to take after trade, one of the cleaner (greedy bastard) farked it for all the workers..... he got caught taking a full shopping trolley of bred and giving it to one of his mate to sell in his deli next day (sharing the profit??), the bakery owner got so cheesed up that was the end of it, all the bred went in the rubbish compactor, the cleaner got reported to his boss by the security manager and got the sack!

No freebies that weren't readily available to everyone else, eg free campsites, no thieving of internet. The deal is if you want to live the free life, go for it, and you don't have to take anything that belongs to someone else. the whole philosophy is to live free and easy, and live longer in a stress free environment !!!!!!!!!!!!!and do what you want to do when you want to do it,

if you ask "have you enough money?" - gee I don't know.

"have you thought of getting in touch with rels, etc." - gee didn't think of that.
"what about lawyers and payments?" - they won't find me.
"what if you fall ill or wanna talk to someone" - I don't care.
"are you gonna have internet so we can reach you" - wow, didn't think of that.

Well, that's someone who's not thinking well, and needs to sit still for a while, think things out or talk things through (or is it the other way around?).

He's not as well planned as the dumpster boy, for instance - no offense.
But he was more talkable couple days ago. Gotta keep him busy, but not go fandango yet.

Once someone is clear on those very simple questions above, then sure, go for it. (except for the stealing part).

PS: and the argument "you weren't the first, you won't be the last" don't seem to help somehow...

If you can't, and just enjoy remembering it, then I guess you aren't copying it are you? If you still argue that you are copying it, how would you prove it?

Remember the face on the guy when the The Termintor asks him for his cloths, boots, and motorcycle?

If you can remember that, then you have a copy of that scene in your head..

I've copied Bohemian Rhapsody, and I can prove it 'cause I can reproduce it whenever I want. Anybody else got a copy?

An old sailing mate of mine is going through a winner-takes-all split and he's not in a good place right now.

Been there done that, (she got the house), I wasn't in a good place then but a few years down the track I couldn't be happier.

I didn't exactly pull up stumps and hit the road, but I certainly changed the way I think about work/lifestyle balance.

The way I see it old mate could retreat into his cave and sulk or head off into the great unknown, I'm damn sure I know what I would encourage him to do.

I was able to rearrange my work/life etc to give me enough freedom to clear my head and re focus but if he feels he needs to get out of town then I can't see a problem with that.
