Im hearin what you are saying Mocha. Its cheap, good value accomodation people are great everything you say is true. Refurbishing the hotels is great except the human waste still goes in the ocean.
Problem is the infrustructure required to support all this is not in place. No good buildin a 5 star resort charge $100 bucks a night and pump the sewrege straight into the drink as they do now. Dump all the rubbish in the hills and kick the villagers out to get their blocks to build the hotels.
Eventually you have to have some systems in place or it goes pear shaped.
Think ancient Rome. Was great for a while then eventually it all went to ****.
I hope I am wrong cause I love Bali as much as anybody.

I went to Bali in 1973 as a sailor on an Aus Navy Parolley Boat.

My impression then was that the Balos were magic people who were being screwed over big time by the Indons.

I haven't been back since mainly because I do not want to spoil my memories of the Elephant Caves and Mount Batur.

From what I hear and see the only change is the magnitude of the screw over the Balos are getting from the Indons.

Phuck the Javans like they phuck over everybody under their influence.

Sukhano and Suharto would have be the two most hated names in Indonesia.

Probably more than most, now it's usually just the stepping stone to the rest of indo..
Balos' are still the best, its the rest that's the problem... And ulu's us a joke...
Last time I was there, aircon surf shops on the cliffs and my mate nearly got beat up for filming us cause the local 'pro' photogs took offense at his better than their gear...
Plus there was about 100 euros hanging out in the cave...

A ferry ride and a car trip away we scored a weeks worth of swell with no one but us and fishermen motoring past scratching their heads
