Out of all the capitals, I'd rate:

Sydney - most aggressive
Melbourne - most courteous in a conservative tweed jacket way
Brisbane - don't give an inch if they can help it
Darwin - Huh? What's traffic?
Perth - no problems.

Pet hate:
People who tailgate me when there's a car in front of me. I usually give them a braking test to wake them up [}:)]

..something about changing lanes while turning...

Funny you should mention that, I saw that exact thing happen today on my way home from work. It did used to be the case, my driving instructor clearly told me that if you are turning right into a two lane road you must turn into its right lane, then merge left once it is safe to do so. That was in Queensland, it was probably Australia-wide though.

Back in the day...

Stick to the speed limit!!!, I recently travelled to Exmouth towing a 6mtr boat . I sat on 80km fron mandurah to geraldton, then 100km from geraldton to exmouth in a LANDCRUISER 80 series , there was absolutely NO diference in my fuel consumption, so all you cronies that sit under the limit to try to save fuel it doesnt work (not in a cruiser anyway). Work an extra hour , to pay for the excess fuel costs , get a bike or dont slow everyone down . Speed limits are set to creat the best traffic flow (sometimes even they are to slow, but thats that). If the limits to fast for you and you feel the need to go slower , for whatever reason maybe its time for the retirement village!! Fossils......

As mentioned previously, the worst driving habit is someone who refuses to let other people overtake them on single carriageways. This is a very dangerous practice and people have been killed through frustration causing them to make bad overtaking decisions.

It should be illegal to travel something like less than 20 km/h under the speed limit with more than 3 cars behind you.

Overall I think Sydney drivers are pretty good. You get the occasional idiot but generally people do the right thing. Sometimes they are even courteous, which I try to respond to appropriately.

Thankfully I drive very little now, only to church on Sundays.

I disagree.
Although i stick to the speed limit mostly now, i did the experiment. From brisbane to perth.I drove one way on the speed limit and drove back at 10 to 20 k's under.200 bucks difference.......
Was in an old falcon 63 XP wagon.

Maybe the fuel economy in a Landy towing a 6m boat is so bad anyway that it doesn't really make any difference?

For the rest of us, Parasitic drag increases with the square of speed, and accordingly we have to use more fuel to maintain a higher speed..

So yeah, do the speed limit, and if you're being a scrooge, don't push the boundaries of the police tolerance by doing an extra 10km over.

My biggest complaint on the road is the people in the big falcodores who can't corner worth mentioning (no fault of the car..), so they go really slow through the fun cornering bits, and then scorch off into the distance as soon as the road opens up a bit and I could actually overtake in my humble 2 litre.

And then I end up stuck behind them at the very next decent corner. That really screws with my fuel economy.

If you're going to buy a big grunty car, so you can feel like a V8 supercar racer, at least do us the favour of learning to drive first!

Its not tail gating.... its called drafting... Minimise drag=Low Fuel Costs!

I reckon trucks are the best to sit behind... And i didnt make this up! Mythbusters did it... and they are always right

Roundabouts **** me the most ,

tards who sit there with there RH indicater on the drive straight through and when they are about 3/4 of the way thru they indicate LH , they bloodywell might as not indicate at all who the F knows where they are going.

Yep retards who dont know what they are doing
your correct about the right hand indicator, only use it if you are turning right, but you ARE SUPPOSED TO indicate left between the last left hand exit and the left hand exit you are going out of, even it that is straight ahead of where you entered.

http://www.officeofroadsafety.wa.gov.au/uhtml/thisSite/older_users/chapter_3.html

While we are on the subject of 'roundabouts', ) well, we're not now, i know, but we were earlier and I didn't have time to put in my 2 bobs worth, so here it is.)

THE RULE FOR ENTERING ROUNDABOUTS IS NOT 'GIVE WAY TO THE RIGHT'.
IT IS 'GIVE WAY TO ALL TRAFFIC ON THE ROUNDABOUT' !!!!!

This means if I enter the roundabout before Flash F. ing Gordon, who is approaching the roundabout on my right intending to use it as a speed racing chicane, I do NOT give way to him/her unless he/she is likely to enter the roundabout before me. This is to allow the traffic to merge through the roundabout with maximum efficiency.

Soooo, the rule is, you must approach the roundabout at a speed which will allow you to avoid conflict with any and all other vehicles ON the roundabout. Whether they be on you left or right is totally irrelevant.
After all, that's what the 'GIVE WAY' sign means at the entry point.

For some reason, almost everyone I ask seems to think that if someone is approaching a roundabout on your right then you must stop and give way to them.
If YOU are on the roundabout first then YOU have right of way.
I think this is why they don't seem to work all that well here in W.A.

Look up the rules on the internet.

Here it is again because I bet you didn't bother the first time!!!

There will be a 2 hour written examination in 1 hours time!
And the pass mark will be 90%.
Anyone who achieves less than that must check in for hanging, or things could go bad for you.

And why is it that when you come up behind a slower driver (eg doing 10k under speed limit) in the left lane and you then pull into right lane to pass, that they then speed up????

Also when you are doing dead on the speed limit in left hand lane, someone comes up from behind, passes and then drops in about 2 ft in front of you and slows down to just under the speed limit????

And dont get me started on the female 'P' platers in their little Hyundai's or Toyota Echo's who zip in and out of traffic leaving no room for braking etc.....

Where does it end???????????

yesterday outside my house a girl my age riding her bike got hit by some lady driver. i sat with the lady driver for a bit to comfort her while we waited for the police. we were watching the girl get treated by the medics.

people need to watch where they are going whether it be on bike or driving a car. bikers and cars must have lights on at sunset until sunrise and riders should always wear helmuts... its soo sad when people laugh and say "it couldnt happen to me" or think they are above saftey laws...

had to get that one out!

I was traveling behind a 4WD doing about 70 (in a 70 zone) in the wet. A clear road. All of a sudden he jams on his brakes! I hit mine, but because the Celica has big stoppers they tend to be a bit sensitive so I locked up. Still missed him, but I suspect the person in front of him was doing the "brake test" and because I couldn't see past the 4WD (and you know how much I love big 4WDs in the city ) it was a total surprise. All I'm trying to say is if you do a "brake test" you may end up affecting someone that you didn't originally intend to affect.

Aggressive driving in Sydney? Sure, I'm one of them. Trying to reform though.

Ummmmm,..? Well actually,.. NO!

The speed limit for towing trailers, caravans, boats etc. is 100km/hr in WA, but only if the trailer weight is over 750Kgs. Otherwise it is the posted speed limit. (Usually 110 Kmph in WA)
(That doesn't mean that it is compulsory to drive at 110Km/hr with a trailer though, so just drive at 1Km/hr slower than the speed at which you will lose control and fly off the road. That's what most people seem to do. Yes. I've seen a few! )

All other states make no reduction in speed limit for vehicles towing trailers, so go for it!

(PS. That's provided that the vehicle manufacturer allows for you to tow an unbraked trailer of 750 kg. Otherwise you can't tow it at any speed. Smaller cars are usually given a lower allowable trailer weight.)

Seeing some car flying up behind me and then sitting that close to my rear bumper when I'm doing the speed limit and sitting in the slow lane. Makes me slow down and hope they just go past and leave me the F### alone! 80% of the time it's a commodore as well and I don't drive a ford.

Interesting you should say about the percentage of Commodores.

Holden was the favoured car brand for hoons, making up 47.3% of all vehicles seized. Fords were next, with 16.9%, and Nissans third on 8.1%

I would have though Subaru would have featured as well.

People who learn to drive off their parents. It should be illegal to learn to drive from your parents, they are too emotionally attached to provide critical feedback, and in close to 100% of cases, untrained in the road rules, advanced and defensive driving skills.

Not sticking to the speed limit.

Not giving cyclists enough room.

Not letting you in when lanes merge.

Not acknowledging when you have let them in.

True actually even though I'm a subaru driver and respectful to other cars on the road. A lot of suby drivers are knobs to other cars on the road, my girlfriend was telling me about one just earlier. I enjoy driving my suby I don't harass anyone on the road so it ****s me when someone starts getting to close to my car, some people just don't realize they drive to close to other cars.

I have a subaru wrx wagon I can fit two boards and all my gear inside, or if I have a passenger the boards can go on the roof. The car is way better on fuel than a v6 or v8 and leaves them for dead.

I think you're getting harassed by other performance cars that want to incite you to give them "a run". I get a little bit of this in the Celica (which is strange as it is not a performance car). I even had the police in a XR8 drag me from the lights a few weeks ago. Things like that never seem to happen when I'm driving the Camry.
Maybe it's just the down side of owning a WRX? (Other than theft, insurance etc).

Yeah sometimes that has been the case not always though and I haven't had it happen many times since I've had the suby most of the time it wouldn't matter what car your in cz you see them tailgating the next person once they don't get a reaction from you. Theft insurance etc I have no issues there at all, maybe the cops were just trying to show off if you have tinted windows cz they would expect a girl to be driving a celica?

Why, I wonder, did the passenger in a passing 4x4 feel a need to shout abuse at me on my bicycle this evening? It wasn't because I was taking up any room on the road, I was waiting at the end of a cycle path to cross it. It wasn't because I was missing any safety equipment, I had front and rear lights and reflective clothing. It wasn't because I'd suddenly appeared and caused them to baulk, they were some distance away when I pulled up.

I think they were just angry people with a lot of hate to share.

At least you haven't been spat on yet. That is what happened to me in Perth back in the '90s.

Maybe the person was:
Drunk.
On drugs.
A tin-box hero or generally an abusive/inconsiderate person.
All of the above?

I gave up riding a bike as I deemed it too risky these days, especially with so many distractions in cars. I don't want to empower fools by sharing the road with them with no protection.

That's why I stick to designated cycleways and gazetted shared carriageways. There's no way you'll catch me trying to share an arterial road with the cages.

While the network of dedicated cycleways is pretty small, there is pretty good coverage across the city with the designated shared roads and made a map of it all. Unfortunately, a lot of the signs are missing and I discovered last week that the route marked NE9 on the map is marked NW9 on what signs were still there. The roads all look the same and quite often there's no way of telling which one you're meant to be on to link to the next part of the route. Getting the map out all the time is a bugger because it's huge and doesn't fold well, so...

Because I'm a total nerd I decided that the GPS I got for speed kiting and has come in handy for so many other things could sit neatly on my bicycle handlebars. It's just a little wristwatch one though with no map facility, so I sat with the paper map and Google Earth and pinpointed all the critical turning points on the map. Once that was done I copied their coordinates across to the GPS and set up routes linking them all together.

It's a neat little idea I reckon, now I have a trip computer and navigation system in one handy unit. I've covered 110km in the last ten days, not bad for commuting on a mountainbike. Fit for summer...
