We're shopping round for pool for our backyard at the moment. Anyone got any experiences with the various companies in Perth?
So far i've been warned off Aqua Technics and Buccanneer.
Any good experiences?

Met a client about 2 weeks ago who had one installed by Freedom. He wasn't happy that they installed it about 200mm out of square.

No. But be very aware of your obligations regarding local laws. It can cost thousands to gate and pool-proof your place before you even start digging.

Best experience I have had has been in neighbor's pools.

No maintenance pools are the best, convince your buds next door they need one this summer.

Interesting you have been warned off the two biggest advertisers - hmmmm.

I have no personal experience but been told some of the secondhand ones can be good. They remove (and backfill the hole) very cheap, so when they sell the secondhand pool refurbished it can be a good price.

Be nice if they could do that with concrete pools. I'd have a cheap one for you!

Good point - the pool will more than likely require a building permit, so the pool supplier should be able to educate you on the process & required fencing (AS 1926 Set-2010). A meeting with a building surveyor also wouldn't go to waste.

Please make sure that you include the fencing & gates in your budget & don't skimp or try to avoid doing it right - too many child drownings in pools these days due to ineffective fencing & pool protection. (Sorry for being a downer - have had experience with these things.)

We have budgeted for all the other bits like fencing and securing windows etc. My wife is the safety police so she was on that before the pool design.
It's such a drama dealing with these companies and you hear of stuff going wrong and some companies stuffing up and not getting levels right etc etc.
The reps are like car yard salespeople.
I'm happy to pay the necessary, I just don't want a nightmare

I repeat: Convince the folks next door to get one, drop round with a carton under your arm. Everybody's happy!

Good luck Rello.

Let me know when it's in and I'll drop round with a carton under my arm!

From what I've heard and read, people generally get one pool in their home owning life and never another.

Get a drafty (registered building designer) on to it - they will ensure that all levels, legal requirements & issues are sorted out before permit stage. It should be the best spent money on the project - a good drafty will save their fees (you money) during the construction stage.

*disclaimer - I'm a registered building designer, so advice is from my own professional experience & feedback from clients (re; investment in documentation vs cost saving) and possibly a bit biased. You still need to be careful though - although there are many good draftys out there, there are some bad ones too.

I built my pool with a few mates. Best thing we ever did.

Kids just love it to death and in summer never out of the thing. Also i wish we had put in a second pump with spa jets now though. It wasn't really something done back then but that would make it even better.

Correct; well for us anyway - great for when the kids are young, but the interest fades as they get into their teenage years... My Mrs wants to fill it in and make a chook yard

PS - both my kids are very strong swimmers and I put that down to being in the water from 6 months of age...

I had Bucaneer install a gas heated pool on a smallish block in Subi 11 years ago.Had no issues at all.Jsut make sure you are there to supervise the install as invariably they will use subcontractors (read Irish backpackers).
We used it alot with young kids winter and summer.Doubtless the firm has changed hands 3 or 4 times since then.
Better to put the pool money towards a move to a beachside suburb as you will likely never see it again.

Try to convince them to go for a SPA can be enjoyed all year round and low maintenance.
The fence bullsheet is good but IMO peeps should be responsible enough to teach theire kids to swimm b4 getting a pool maybe???
Why should oldies with no kids forced to have a fence????? Crap!
I was looking at pools some years ago and my favorit was a concrete one that had a gravel beach and big rocks integrated that was making it look like river bed in europe, was a mob in Joondalup (Winton rd.?) and was not expensiver than fibre glass.

I think fencing is meant to stop anyone's kids from letting themselves into a pool, not just the owner's kids.

Kids are kids, and if they can climb a normal fence, then they can get into your yard. The pool fence is meant to stop them then getting into the pool.

A toddler in Armidale NSW drowned in an unfenced pool a couple of years ago. The pool was derilict and in poor condition.

The owner of the pool is being prosecuted with manslaughter over this.

The way the law is used now you'd have to be mad to have an unfenced pool.

Well if they can climb the perimetre fence they sure can open the swiming pool gate!!!!! so it is a stupid requirement!
Now if you do not have a perimetre fence you sure should have a swiming pool fence!
And then in that case should we get all the beaches, rivers, parks ponds and foutains fenced????? bloody nany state!

No, I don't agree. A lot of normal fences have railings (I can't remember the actual name), and are easy to scale. Even for me, and I am fat and old.

The idea of a pool fence, is that it has no such railings to climb on at an accessible height, and the latches are meant to be designed so that a young kid cannot open them.

If it is a normal yard fence, a child could put something up against the fence and use that to climb over.

Nanny state? Hardly. A lot of lazy people thinking it would never happen to them, more like it.

I think it has changed or will change, but I think you are allowed to class your side fences as part of the pool fence. At least in my situation, it means that kids from my yard can get into the neighbours pool area by climbing the side fence, whereas the owner's kids have to contend with a proper pool fence, so that they can't get in.

So, do you remember being a kid? Kids are very resourceful, and sometimes not so smart.

Most pool fences would be almost impossible to climb for any kid under 6.

This is for safety, if you dont like it dont get a pool. Simple really.

PR,

it goes without saying that a pool = less $$ for kites & boards...I only hope your kids are of an age so that they are the ones cleaning the thing so you're not held up at home when the wind is on????

We love our pool
Had it about 4 yrs now.
Its concrete and didn't go in with out incidents
It was sposed to be 6 ft deep and ended up only 5ft
I dont know how nobody noticed this as there was so many trades involved.
I found out when I did my virgin swim....
Not happy Jan....
Its rectangular pool 8 x 3.5
Works out that with out a 6ft end the whole pool is utilized
Am very happy this mistake occurred as I saved $2000 ( final payment )
Volley ball is great when you can touch the bottom.
Since then two of my friends also got 5ft deep pools...

Any way pools are fun for half the year but I personally dont know anyone who has put one in and been happy with supplier.

Don't care really..... have a spa! just saying ..... and also ,just saying, that all property perimetre fences would be impossible to climb by a 6 yo. Just saying!
and also a 6 yo should know how to swim! my kids new at 4 how to get out of a pool if falling in! education I guess!
