This question got asked of myself and my class mates when I was at school. I will always remember the silence that ensued after the answers were written on the board. We were asked - What makes someone Australian?
- Someone born in Australia
- Hard working
- Loves a laugh
- Swears
- Sticks up for him/herself
- Multicultural
- Loves sports
- Likes a beer
Yeah, what a laugh. Am I correct in thinking that implies anyone that was born overseas, likes to work smarter rather than harder, can take things seriously, has manners, avoids confrontation, can speak more than just poor English alone, likes art/music etc, and doesn't drink (Australian) beer is, by implication, someone not to be liked or trusted?
Here is what I think makes someone an
Aussie as opposed to an Australia.
- Born in Australia
- Think they are hard working *
- Loves low-brow humour
- Swears
- Has a chip on their shoulder/paranoid
- Speaks only English. Poorly.
- Loves watching sport
- Is an alcoholic
* Median household income is $66K which after benefits barely pays any tax/contributes at all.
**** off we're full of idiots?
Also, I'd just like to say that most of these types of debates get too black & white. Both sides of the debate can be a little ignorant or cherry-pick facts. The vast majority of the people we are talking about fall somewhere in the middle.
Anyway, peace out as much as you can, yada yada, love yous all.
