What is it in WA with this. Lots of people sit in the right hand lane, and lots of people then sit behind them and shift to the right to try and bully them into moving.

I don't mind when people want to overtake, but here its like you go to overtake someone when you are over the speed limit and some clown is then behind you a car length behind you, sitting to the right to try and hurry you up. Of course, when you then get past the person you were passing, the same idiot that was behind you slows down.

The number of people that suddenly match your speed when you catch them on the freeway is so annoying. Cruise control has been standard on lots of cars for a long time now, so why are people not using them?

And the number of people that stay at 60 to 70kph when trying to merge onto a freeway.....

I wonder if EVs are better at staying at constant speeds? I would hope so.

While I am whining, its sort of funny with Toyota cruise controls. If someone cuts infront of you the cruise control backs rights off and the distance is not that small, at least for driving in Australia. Not that I have a Toyota but I have rented one with cruise control and found this so irritating that someone would pull in in-front of me and my car would suddenly back right off.

'Perf' freeway driving skills. I don't think I have been anywhere in the developed world that is as big omnishambles of dumbfeckery as driving on the freeways here.
I was driving on the freeway with a friend from Canada recently. She asked me what the freeway rules were because she couldn't figure out what was going on. Initially she was freaked out that people used the left lane to overtake, and how was that even legal? She had decided that the right lane was for the use of big 4WD and SUV's and the left lane was for cars and trucks, which she had to admit seemed a little weird... As for merging like a zipper; don't get me started.

Yeah the adaptive cruise control catches a lot of people out.

Several times recently on longer drives I have caught up to a few cars doing a bit less than the speed limit. I've passed at the speed limit and watched the trailing cars pull out, overtake the lead vehicle and then continue at the speed limit.

Their speed was reduced like a frog in a pot of water on a stove. It's not until they get a visual cue that they're well slower than they thought, then they get back up to speed.

Just been reading this. Even though electric cars are cleaner than ICE cars, it really makes no difference to the planet. Consumers are being guilted into trying to fix a problem they cannot solve.

www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08-28/diesel-mining-truck-converted-to-electric-to-lower-emissions/104230918

55,000 trucks produce 174,000,000 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to 38,000,000 cars
1 truck produces 3163.6 tons of CO2
1 car produces 4.6 tons of CO2

Replace 1 ICE truck with an electric one, save 690 cars emissions
Replace 1 electric car with 1 ICE car, save 1 cars emissions

I get your point about who/what is responsible for most of the emissions. But given we have limited oil reserves remaining, it seems prudent to look for other methods to propel our vehicles regardless of the degree of emissions benefit.

I don't think there are too many mining trucks on the road. My experience driving a 5 tonne truck tells me that it used about 30l of diesel per 100km, but it spent a lot of time running while stopped to power the fridge unit.

But when I look at the cheaper end of EVs I see a lot of glass roofs. They must show the dirt, even if they're cleaner

Didn't you work that out a long time ago. Much like many other things.

But - I assume that people mainly purchase EVs or hydrids now because they are better. Not better for the planet but better for the owner, in whatever ways the owner assesses what they want in a vehicle.

For me, on my assessment of my wants/needs I don't think they are quite there yet, not enough to swap from what I have. If what I had burnt down and I had to buy a new vehicle I'd certainly consider something other than ICE only. But another few years and things might change. Of course they might also not change.

But heavy trucks running regular routes and delivery trucks running local routes do make more sense to me to be fully EV than alot of cars. Benefit all-round just seems to be amplified over a car.

I looked on the interwebby thing to see what this Agenda 2030 is all about. My top hits from my search returned lots of info about the UN paper.

THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
sustainabledevelopment.un.org/content/documents/21252030%20Agenda%20for%20Sustainable%20Development%20web.pdf?ref

I had a look through the goals the UN have outlined for 2030. It's sorta hard to see how these imitate life in any sort of Gulag. Does that mean DuckDuckGo has been manipulated by The Illuminati and I am not getting the facts anymore?

15 minutes? I can't waddle for even 10 mins. do you think they will make allowances for this and let me live closer to the TAB and pub?

Lucky I live mins from the water (not on the waterfront like some other lucky stiffs), but at least its less than 15mins.

Bring it on, the local will have way less people to share with.

I ask the snooty EV owners if they have a 3yo phone and 15yo TV like I do ... haven't found one yet.
seems some highly polluting high resource use / consumerism is ok and some is not.

EV owners - most of them think the power comes from the battery so its clean energy.

But where does the energy to charge to the battery come from?

I bet its mostly from coal and gas lol.

Almost Mark, my phone is certainly more than 3yo, and my TV probably would be 15yo if it hadn't broken, beyond my repair capabilities.

I do DIY and recycling as much as possible.
Because I run linux OS I can use 10year old computers well enough to do what I want with them.

Our BEV has an 8yr warranty so we'll probably keep it until we can no longer drive.

And by the way, I try not to be snooty.

But I take your point there are some wankers around, but that applies to a lot of ICE car owners as well.

I'll claim to be a non-snooty EV owner, well its actually my wifes car. As someone who owns a "fun" ICE, the EV is just a better daily experience then a petrol car. Torque everywhere, quieter, and never have to visit the servo, it just gets plugged in of the evenings. Lots of convenient functions like ability to leave the aircon on when kids fallen asleep in the baby seat, or remotely turn aircon on before you get to the car on a hot day. Potentially most new cars are starting to get these features even ICE ones? End of the day if you have ability to charge at home, and need a new car, it's not hard to see that an EV is just a more convenient appliance to get you from a to b on a daily basis.

I also have a 3yr old phone, but I don't have a 15yr old TV, but that's because I didn't own a TV until about 2 years ago...

I think end of the day, once people get past the whole scare campaign around wokeness, the EV's will eventually take over once their prices come down a bit more on the basis that for 90% of people they are a better driving experience.

Definitely driving electric cars really isn't gonna change the world, I'd assume its better for the environment to keep driving your old car then to buy a new car. I like the QLD governments 50c fare initiative, a very cheap investment that I reckon would have an outsized affect on reducing emissions and traffic on roads.

I want to be an EV driver, we'll see how slotting myself behind the wheel of a vehicle with serious horsepower changes my attitude.

Currently riding a 19 year old push bike for my commute.
The VW van is still racking up kms after ticking over 720,000 last week.

Had to buy a new phone because 3G isn't being supported and I got sick of listening to that recorded message

I can beat you there, I'm still riding the bike I bought with my life savings when I was 14, that was 1959. So that's about 65 years I've had it and it was second hand then. It's a top notch dutch bike, so I assume a Couple came out from Holland with their bikes, then at some point later, decided to return. So it's possibly 70years old.

You did not have to buy a new mobile phone it was for your convenience you bought one.

Use a landline. Life still went on ok when there were no mobiles.

The smartphone is the tool that allows the digital social credit system to potentially happen.

Without the smartphone their social credit system cannot happen.

I have not used a mobile phone for 3 years and i never will again as i do not want to be complicit in the coming Orwell social credit points system that is just about upon us.

Doesn't sound like a very well thought-out plan. Or a particularly demonic form of tyranny....

I feel even gen z will be able to fight their way out of this one. Not quite as bad as digging in on the western front.

Me, I rub two sticks together and light a fire using scavenged fence palings for heating. I push my cart down to the local shops and go through the bins for their "expired" food.

When I need to send a message to someone I use a blanket on the fence paling fire to send morse code. It takes a while, but it works.

For windsurfing I use gear from 1992. It is the best value dollar for dollar. Anything else is just lazy and for your convenience.

China bans EVs, or a handful of businesses with carpark a to low to allow entry of fire fighting trucks.

"For context, there have been six reported EV fires - from the estimated 180,000 EVs on local roads - in Australia, according to FireSafe."

Of the six reported, three were caused by an external fire, while one was due to arson.

This leaves two EV fires caused by a road collision and the other from road debris."
