i always assumed rockingham had a very limited variety of different dna.

Thats because of the bypass roads

First post here, kinda spurred into it in defence of poor old Rockingham....

Ignore the stupidity of those who type insults from afar.....and near!!!

My two kids are now at the upper teen level, having been raised in Rocky with NO probs, in fact the older they get, the more fun they are to have around.

There most definately is an element of society down here which will be a blot on the rest of the community....the type of poeple that will tell you to "p!55 off" and "We don't want you".

You sound like an intelligent and well mannered person to me, and as such you wouldn't fit into the gutter alongside such people.

I hope you stay here and increase the standard of the place with your family.

I travelled there a few times in 2008. Not a bad area and I have the following observations:

Plenty of industry around there so there should be plenty of well paid jobs

Drinking a carton of beer with a few mates on the front lawn next to your VC Commodore is the go.

The shopping strip is pretty seedy with lots of sex shops and a few pubs that are a bit down market.

The coastline is spectacular.

We were thinking of moving to WA and I spent a bit of time at a school close to Rockingham, but a bit inland in a suburban sprawl. There was a teaching job going there and the principal invited me down to have a look. The kids seemed okay, similar to kids in NSW. The teachers did not seem to be too stressed out.

lots of sex shops? there is one strip club and a couple of commercial shops (ie adultshop) scattered over town not different to anywhere else.

I dare say since then your last visit the town might look a bit different...there is a new a shopping centre in the centre of town that would almost rival some of the bigger gallerias and the like, there are a whole lot new ammenities along the foreshore with its latest revamps with more to come.

Sick waves of the back of garden island, cant surf there tho you will get chased away by the navy

Rockingham isnt that bad , theres sh!t just about in every suburb except where they can't afford the rent. My kids are great ,well mannered and no trace of Bogan in their bloodline, But we do live south of Pomgolia (Secret Harbour ) and theres less deroes down this way . Too far from Centrelink . Your kids will be fine if you're not a bog lapping, mullet wearing a-hole.

seeing the aerials makes me realize how much the bushthere has been filled in.
when I was younger we would ride our bikes from through the bush from rocky park ( stage 1) all the way to point peron with no houses at all

I like how they have there own accent you can always tell Rocco or Armadale folks just by the way they talk I recon.

I am bringing up 2 well adjusted and in my humble opinion absolutely delightful children in Rockingham and would like to concur with Landyachts last post.
It generally has nothing to do with the area that you live but the time spent with your children, doing what you expect every other parent to do with their children;...know where they are and spend as much time with them as a positive role model as you can. Just disregard the pratts that live outside the area as they are metaphorically speaking out of there hindquarters. As with any suburb North or South of the river, there are certain areas within each suburb that should be avoided and any real estate agent worth their salt will know these areas. If you have bought in a less desirable area of Rockingham then I can only suggest that you sell up and move to a more desirable area..even a street away, as you could have the same sort of neighbours as you have irrespective of where you live. Having said that, my first home in Rockingham was in a less desirable suburb, at the time and I'd have to say it was the nicest in all aspects from layout to neighbours that I have ever been fortunate enough to live. I left and have returned to bring up my children

Yep, bringing them up and loving it. They are to. Disregard the responses from those not from Rockingham and if the neighbours you have give you grief, i give my sincere condolences but where ever you move to you may have similar neighbours. Landyacht has the right idea... be prepared to spend as much time as possible with your children and worry less about possessions...which is'nt to say you already do. If that is a tall order don't bother having children and enjoy your life doing what you want...you will have to sacrifice something, but the rewards of bringing up children in Rockingham are well worth it

Enjoy where you live, if not then look for somewhere else. I suppose it comes down to how a place is portrayed.

Never lived there, but there would be stacks to like about Rockingham. Close to the water, great fishing, sailing, (currently) plenty of work nearby... how could / would you not like living there and bring up your kids.

If Today Tonight is looking for a story, they will find what they are looking for and match it to the article, look for one "bogan" then suddenly that is what the whole place is like.

As an aside...
Someone I know did alot of presentations to schools about road safety and how serious injuries from drink driving change people's lives...

Nearly always her comments are that the kids from so called "bogan" areas are ready to listen, ask intelligent questions, offer assistance and take the message in. Kids from the other areas are usually the opposite and very hard work...
