Windsurfing @ Georges River, NSW in 1984
Interclub racing during the winter of 1984. Raced in very strong westerly winds, probably in the 30+ knot range.
You can see in the photos the speed generated by way of their wake & the fact there are no fountains coming
up from the centreboard slots. They were really near V max in speed.
The starting list included several World & Australian champions. The photos show Phil McGain (bright pink sail)
leading the chasing pack around a triangular course. He was so far in front in this particular race he even had
time to perform a duck gybe at the wing mark. All of the boards were of the older spec with pull out centreboards,
which were then slung over the arm on the downhill reaches & runs. Most then also were using the latest mylar
regatta sail.
All photos are from scanned colour negatives taken in 1984.
