Flat Turn VS Hard On A Rail
I was watching some suppers down the coast and since people are going to wide short thicker boards 8'6 ish the tendency for most is to do pretty flat ugly turns. Yes it does throw water but frankly it looks bloody awe full.

One of these guys used to shred on a 9.0 hard on the rail all the time, but by going so short has lost all the style and explosive power he once had.

When watching the ISA event it even looked like the judges were scoring the flat turns in a similar range to the rail turns.

Has the critera shifted to make up for the change in style?

I hope not!

A powerful hack...

Have a close look...

The positive;
Here's a very powerful hack by Pancho Sullivan in Mexico, in 2006. I was one of several lucky ones to see the final day of surfing at the 2005 Vans Triple Crown Hali'ewa Event (from the beach), and watch a brilliant display from Pancho. Jarrad Howse surfed really well on the day, and some of Mick Fanning's power carves and air drop floaters were totally unbelievable in the final... Mick broke a board, and that probably cost him the win to be honest... But you couldn't deny Pancho either. My vote goes with some good old school power carves every day... Pancho. The swell built most of the day, and it was triple over-head on the best sets for a chunk of the day.

The negative;
With some trepidation I suggest that this photo sums up why SUP surfing will always be a poor cousin to "short-board" surfing... You just can't do it this tight, or throw water like this...
Positive - Kyron goes hard though!
Another positive - awesome photo hey!!?

Shortboarding to SUP...
At this risk of bringing more surfers into the SUP community, what are your thoughts on the concepts in this article?

North West Trip
Just got back from the North west trip with my family. Won't bore you with too many happy snaps but here's a few SUP related ones. Not many surfing ones of course as none of my lot are interested in sitting around taking video or pics.

Spent a week at a well known surf camp up there and had it's signature wave by myself most mornings - seems to be too cold for most crew who are happy to wait till it warms up about 10. I missed catching Hilly due to car problems unfortunately, he has some great pics though.

We did the Pilbura and Broome as well, awesome places with some great paddling. Flew Virgin with 4 SUPs, 2 shortboards, a boogie, snorkling stuff, spearguns, camp gear, all up 16 pieces of baggage...lol.

2011 Jimmy Lewis Shredder 9'4 and 9'9
Hello friends,
my shipment of the new JL landed about 1 week ago and I already had a chance to try the new Shredder 9'4 and 9'9.

My previous used board was the JL Surf 9'8.
IN the past I have owned: Bonga 10'0 - Starboard 9'0 - 9'8 ' - 10'3 all the series of JL surf 9'8 - 10'0 - 10'4 - 10'8.

I recently tried the PSH Ripper 9'3 and the Jerry Lopez 8'10.
The JL Shredder 9'4 definitely enter in the same category of the last 2 boards.

All of them are great once on the wave! Is hard for me to tell witch one is better as is not the board to limit the performance but the rider. I felt that the JL give you a bit more of speed down the line but could have been just the different conditions.

What difference them is quite allot is the ability of gliding in flat water and when you have to paddle to catch a wave.
The JL glide much better and getting in the wave is way easier then the other 2 boards. I would say same at least the same as the JL Surf 10'0.. (just to give you an idea)... Also I felt more stable and at ease on the board even when stationary.

The JL 9'9 is also a very good board once on the wave is very loose and turn well.
Almost felt no difference on the 9'4 but been a bigger board is way easier and more stable.. I'm my opinion is as easy as the SB 9'8 but with another level of performances. As easy of use, stability and glide I will compare to the JL Surf 10'4.

Construction the usual JL + the carry handle that was really missing.

I like more the old pad with the platform in the middle but I guess here you can use more the rails and move easier the feet everywhere on the board.

If you want to try the boards just come to visit us down in Bali.
Bye Jankie
