What does religion mean to you?
I had a proud father moment yesterday when my 7 y.o daughter asked me a great question.
She goes to a catholic school and have been learning about the creation story, Adam and Eve etc etc. As part of her own curiosity in life she has has also been learning about evolution, dinosaurs etc. Her question was obvious; if dinosaurs existed before humans and the world was changing than how did the bible creation story fit?? How can they both be true? I tried to answer but probably only confused her more.
My view on religion and why I choose to send her to a catholic school is not necessarily based upon the belief of one holy being that created everything but on an idyllic value system, be nice to others, do not steal, be honest etc etc. The school teaches respect and acceptance above all else, I like that. I also spend a lot of time in Thailand and love the Buddhist beliefs.
I'd probably go as far as to say that most churches are full of people that describe feeling god when in fact they are feeling being in a room of people that like and want to be nice to them. A lot of people have never felt this before hence the epiphany.
If there is a god or any kind of other universal force (could simply be how people remember you) I believe it cares not for religion, only for people trying to make the world a better place. So no matter how you frame it, atheism, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or whatever. If there is any kind of universal force all you need to do is be a good person, there is no interpretational argument, yes or no...
Keen to hear how you guys view religion or what drives you to be or not to be a good person and what if you are trying you hope to achieve from it...
