I'm a 80kg wing foiler on HA1080 and want to do short DW runs of 500-1000m and go back upwind. My regular spot is Cabezo in El Medano which is kind of small to mid wind swell waves and wind of 13-18kn.Would the 870 have more glide than my 1080? I don't need all the lift 1080 has, but still would want to have at least the same glide and stall speed and ideally tighter turns. Or is 970 a better choise?
honestly i'd be going the 870. Will take you a bit to adjust but even the 870 will have a ton more glide than the 1080 once you understand how to access it. It will turn but it's a different style of turning. The 870 has replaced our 1080 for down winding and even surf foiling in really small conditions. The 970 (i have both) will def give you more glide but the span is quite noticeable - forget trying to rip a turn on that even close to a 1080.
Yoi really need to choose a UHA on equivalent span rather than sq cm.
what are your thoughts on MA890 equivalent? Looking for something for weak Perth light wind sessions as the 890 is starting to feel a bit stodgy
You talking about DW? In the surf ? I will assume DW - look the only time i put on the 890 is when the bumps are lined up and with some energy. Given that and say the 120 on a blue/ red - then it can be so much fun and it forces you to turn more and keep in the swell lines pocket. That being said it has a remarkable ability to pump and link up swell lines - especially with a small tail.
That being said even at my weight 80kg it can feel a size too big at times and I wish sometimes I had a 790.
I also have used the 890 quite a bit when down augusta / margs (and i def put the MA on on say WSW winky runners locally) to deal with the power and unruly ocean down there. Again wish i was on the 790 at times.
I've yet to use the 690 (except FD/Boogie - it's the unicorn size) but hopefully i get over my chicken sh1t courage next season.
But for DW light runs . you want the equivalent 770 depending on your weight and skill. Even then at times I had the 670 lol. Not related but the 570 is an amazing size on those nuking days (well even in 20 knots it rocks) and man it's a damn fine boogie two size when the waves aren't huge.
any dribbling as usual - yeh light wind runs - done them on the 890 and fck they are hard work.
