What’s your boat’s displacement?
If you think an Excel 5 is the right anchor, I’d have thought 10mm chain is the go. As to length, I’d have thought 40m is the minimum and 50 or more would be better.

This was a tragic event for the Rescue Association. What I find strange is the lack of information about the 54-year-old yachtsman who lost his life and any details on his yacht. We don't know whether he was entering or leaving. The Australian media seems to have lost the ability to report anything that represents news! So far, all I have heard is that the yacht will be recovered.

I don't think the media are at fault, they can only report what is known. Apparently the yacht sank, so entirely likely, given no distress call from the sailor, the name of the yacht or any other identifying details wont yet be known. Reported that divers are going to go down, so more may be discovered by them. Also unknown, if he didn't log his intentions, is whether he was coming or going. It's possible family or friends may yet come forward with information about him and his boat, but again the media cannot report what is not yet known, and if they are not chasing up his family and/or friends to find out more, that's OK with me. No doubt more detail will come out in official investigations as they are done and in the coroner's report when that is done.

If the name of the yacht is Free Spirit, it could be a 34 footer built out of King Billy pine and launched in 1969 by Peter Brown of Lindisfarne in Tassie. Original name Manapouri. Sailed to Sydney, sold and renamed Free Spirit in 1973. In 2019 she was owned by a Glen E Reynolds of Werrington in NSW. Yacht of that name is still on the Australian Ship register, ON 355358, with home port of Sydney.

Oh, already a member over at Balmain.

Very over doing my own work too - spent enough time looking like a Smurf and figure my time (and back!) is worth a bit more than that.

It's more that I now have a boat much bigger than my last, so it opens up the possibility of going a bit further afield for a better price (and an excuse for a longer sail).

If it's a yard you want and a longer sail, then why not make enquiries of Mid-Coast Boatyard in Newcastle? Door to door its about 70 miles including getting out of Sydney Harbour and into the marina (NCYC) next door to the boat yard. With the right wind, your boat should make Newcastle in daylight hours at the moment, assuming you start at first light and can average 7 knots. Or you could stop over in the Hawkesbury on the way if you want to take your time and make a scenic trip of it.

Newcastle boat yard charged me $618.20 incl GST in 2023 to lift my boat, clean the hull, and put her back in the water. Rate at the time was $12 per foot ex GST for the lift and $82 per hour ex GST for one hour of hull cleaning.

Also, have you considered joining a club? Sydney Amateurs Sailing Club has a slipway. sasc.com.au/facilities/#Moorings

"The Club offers a slipway and shipwright services at discounted rates to members. We also provide weekend slipping for members who wish to work on their vessels."

Admittedly membership fees ("joining fee: $734.00 (which can be paid in three stages over three years). Annual subscription: $786.00.") would likely offset any initial savings in slipping costs, but if you expect to be based in Sydney and slipping your boat every year or so, being able to do your own work in the slip yard on weekends might be worth it?

In July 2024 at White Bay 6 near Balmain, it cost me as below. Per foot and per meter is my calculation given 40ft/12m boat

Pressure Blast $203.94 $5.10/ft $17.00/m
Environmental Levy $143.70

Altex no.5 2 coats rolled

Trouble with magic eraser is it is a significant source of microplastics.
