my latest wing addition is a 5m ocean rodeo glide (hybrid, not full aluula). after a few sessions my initial impression is that i really don't like this wing and i'm trying to understand why. this is my smallest wing. my other two wings are a 5.5m strike v2 and 7m cwc, which i have a lot more time on. i've only taken the glide out in for me very windy conditions (gusting 25+) and i was definitely overpowered at 80kg. my main gripe with the wing is that it's very jittery under power and tended to have this backwind effect where wind would catch on the wrong side of the wing. sometimes it would throw me off, but most of the time it would make me spend way too much effort working to control the wing. even in lulls when i tried to sheet in hard i would experience the same thing. this made me nervous to push and i think i would have been better off taking the strike v2. i find the f-one wings more predictable.
i'm thinking of a few different possible explanations:
1. wing design between ocean rodeo and f-one is very different so i simply need more time to get used to ocean rodeo
2. the wind is much more turbulent at the higher wind speeds and i would have experienced the same effect using an f-one wing
3. ocean rodeo with its design and stiffness requires a higher level of skill overall to master (my skill level is still low)
anyone else experiencing anything similar?
I have exactly same impressions. Could not get to like this wing. Just replaced it with Cabrinha Mantis, which even in a smaller -4m - size feels much more composed.
I have the 6m,5m and 4m OR GLIDE hybrids for 15months and I can't find any suitable replacement that are as light and good in the waves at the moment. I'm 85kg, the 5m is at the limit of its range in 25knots its my main wing from 12 to 22knots if it's blowing over 17 solid I use the 4m up to about 30 knots.
Plus you need high pressure in both struts 12 in the boom and I over pump by 2 in the leading edge this make the whole wing feel like a blade and more stable in gusts. Plus the carbon handles also help significantly with control
. If you don't have enough pressure then I agree it's horrible to control at the top end as you describe. Try the OR again, the f1 Strike it's nice and light but power delivery is very different. Your 5.5 and 5.0 are too close IMHO.

The first thing to do is to remove the middle handle from the wing altogether, then the front and rear handles are fastened in the now vacant spots - the lower handles will make that 5m feel great - this is how you should have the handles (unless carbon ones)

Have a look at this video from Real watersports
I'm not sure this is your issue but the glide is so hyper efficient that on occasion I have found myself outsailing the wind window and backwinding by going to hard and too fast upwind. you just need to back off your angle slightly and reach the front arm forward to bring the wing back into the window. It might be because of the narrower leading edge on the A series though (don't know whether the hybrid has this issue). Is your front arm straight when you are sailing?
Definitely adjust the handles as shown above or get the carbon handles which are a big upgrade.
you were also overpowered. I find the glide behaves very well overpowered but any wing is going to be a little weird when it's not in its range. Have you tried it in the 16-20 range?
It could be that your front hand grip is too far back for those high wind conditions. If so, it will tend to dive on you (come at you). Move your front hand to the front 1/3rd of the handle and report back. Feather the angle of the wing with the rear arm to keep it in the sweet spot. Carbon handles make this much easier, but they are likely east to ding your board if you are still in earlier stages of progression.
Hand placement on tacks should also be taken into consideration for this reason when in high winds. If you let go of rear hand with front hand on the leading 1/3 of front handle, some wings will dive. Put it in the center it will be more neutral. Towards the back and the wing will lift.
Have no experience with OR wings, but 25+ wind way too much for any 5m wing. It will work but it will be "jittery" and hard to ride.
The OR has a thin leading edge. When they made the allulla wing they were saying more psi ans thinner leading edge will glide more and be the next best things. However it reduced the grunt.so it's probably has the same grunt of a smaller wing, more like a 4.2-4.5 of some other brand in my opinion. But that wing is stable and works in higher wind best.
I'm in the 72kg range and at 25kts, I'm reaching for my 2.2m wing. 5m is my light wind wing that I can starting riding around 12kts. I'm thinking the 5m OR was just overpowered. Especially if it was 25kt average wind. You were likely seeing gusts close to 30.
But you should also realize that as you go smaller with wings, things get progressively more hectic. The wind ranges are larger (25kt average is probably a real range of 22 - 28kts), so wings have a lot to handle. The 2.2m in 25 - 30kts is a wild ride, but the wind swell at that point is so fun it's totally worth it.

Totally agree. 25knt plus and i am looking for my 4m. I am 87kg.
great to get some feedback on this. it sounds like there is at least a bit of consensus supporting my theory that the ocean rodeo wing might overall be a bit harder to sail than other wings like f-one.
i made the modification to remove the soft handles immediately after getting the wing, so all sessions i was referring to above were all after modifying the handles. however, there seems to be strong agreement about the carbon handles being better. i might buy a set, but i am a bit hesitant to ding my board. i'm also not sure i want to invest more money into ocean rodeo. i bought this size because i got it cheap, but also because i wanted to be familiar with ocean rodeo design and sizing before maybe buying their new 2023 graflyte in either 5m or 6m. This decision might have saved me some money as I'm definitely not buying the graflyte unless my experience changes. i will try my current wing in less wind to see if i think the behavior is the same.
The OR glides are so well behaved.. Even overpowered... For sure your need to have done the "remove middle floppy handle" mod... And for sure your need good inflation pressures.. 25 knots is definately pushing the upper limit for your weight on a 5mt... But you really owe it to yourself to ride it alot more from 15 to 20... I've got tons of hours on the 6mt and it surfs great when flagged and super smooth pointing high when mega powered.. Can't fault the design at all.
