Hi Dorothy,
You are not alone. Loved your imagery. I take every chance that I can (2-3 times/year) to wing foil on the Ocean and am always humbled. But, also stoked beyond belief. Reading the swell and waves, absorbing and assimilating their energy, joining in the dance ... I feel like I am connecting with Mother Earth on a spiritual level.
For me, entering my 5th summer wing-foiling, mostly on fresh-water lakes, the challenges presented by the ocean are layered. There is novelty and the unknown: ocean waves, shore break, swell, tides, cross-currents, forecasting, and wind patterns, but also aquatic life (large and small), fishing boats, shipping lanes, etc. And, then, there's the testing of my skills in this new and dynamic environment.
I do my best to educate myself about the former to assuage my fears. Regarding the later, I accept the fact that my fresh-water skills will only be 50-75% reproducible on the ocean, and I proceed with extreme caution. For example, while foot switching was something that I mastered on fresh-water 2 years ago, I am only now able to switch feet with reasonable confidence on the turbulent ocean.
Be careful out there and know -really accept the fact -that cumulative experience (anywhere) will help you progress and conquer new domains.
Best,
- Stuart
