Extending my kookdom...picked up my first PW, and had my first ground session in some really gusty/fluky wind. Fun, and learned a lot, but I have no kiting background and it would be helpful to have a few resources explaining basics of flying/controlling the PW in a thorough and detailed way.
I kept experiencing moments of "why is it doing that?" (e.g. leading edge diving down; steering loss; etc)...and "why can't I make it do this?" (e.g. park it just off the ground with leading edge up), so I'm talking really basic elements of flight/control...
Just fly it on land for an hour and you will figure it out. Then hit the water and let the real fun begin![]()
There will be several words of displeasure coming out of your mouth so be prepared for disappointment. Make sure there is an exit point downwind of where you begin because you will need it. Also, a knot tying class would be helpful. Eventually after several walks of shame you will get the hang of it and wonder why everyone isn't doing it. Videos can give you pointers but you need water time to really learn how to do it. Enjoy the journey!
Thanks Hdip...I did figure out the steering loss, and will likely get some online coaching...I've just been a bit at a loss for the lack of real details on PW control basics for beginners...nearly all the intro vid's I'm seeing are about how to get up on foil...often after a brief rundown of proper gear and conditions, and suggestions to practice on land first (and perhaps turn bar to the left to make it go left!) , while throwing in kiting jargon as if anyone considering this obviously knows these things.
I know it is mostly going to be time doing it, and I will put in the work and pay my dues...just seems like there's a gap in what people trying to help are actually providing (for me at least as a pretty cerebral learner)...
