I have just received a new board. Published weight 5kg, my scales 6.3kg, the box actually says 6.1kg. So that's well over 20% heavier which is unacceptable. The shop (online watersports shop) is dealing with it and is talking to the manufacturer as I've said I don't want it.
Have many people had this before? I've always weighed new boards but never had such a big discrepancy.
I'm not annoyed with the 6.3kg, I do sometime prefer my heavier board in some occasion, more momentum in swell..keep speed better on the flat, but that is false advertising. Quality Control with 20% off...that indicates that you could also receive a 4kg board that you would potentially have durability issues with foilbox..rail etc?

are you sure your scales are correct if you are weighing bare board as weight on box will be the total weight of the package so includes cardboard, packing, straps etc.
if the bare board is 5kg I'd expect total weight of package to be around 6.1
I think it's a good idea to weigh a new board out of the box to have a baseline in case the board starts to leak. This happened to me when my board very slowly started taking water in through the handle. After a couple months of use I discovered it had gained nearly 3 pounds! This leak was only discovered by my friend when a nose repair was being done and the board was transferred from a cold, outdoor space to a warm room and the handle started bleeding air off and squealing.
Of course I weight all my new boards. With a kitchen scale precise to the gram :-)
As received, for checking if it is within the manufacturer specs (+-5% in general), but very importantly, also each time I add something: hexatraction, fins, rail savers.... The idea is to have a reference weight to be able to check for leaks without having to remove the pads :-)I love light boards, but realistically, my heavier boards were more ding resistant.
if a new board is heavier than normal, I ask for a rebate, as a compensation to have to resell it earlier.PS: as patronus said, check if the stated weights were with or without the pads.
I weigh them.
I have discovered little, very hard to see, dings on a couple boards i have owned.
It is impossible to know how long they have been there, how much water got in etc...without a "dry" weight.
Drying EPS really sucks.
Appletree,Levitaz and Takoon are making boards with XPS foam (waterproof) but they are a bit heavier.I think all 3 brands are sharing factory in Portugal.
The board was 6.3kg on the kitchen scales and the box indicated the board was 6.1kg. It also showed a gross weight for board and packaging.
In answer to above, for me a light board weight is massively important. I'd rather try and look after a board and repair it if necessary rather than buy a heavy tank. This missed the point though, advertised as a light board and in fact it's not, it's 20% over and is an average weight board. Had this been published I wouldn't have purchased it.
Still waiting on the outcome.
is it a small board? 5kg (published) seems pretty light to me if its a production so im curious to know the brand
I usually weight all my new boards (just the board, and then with the straps attached as well). Measuring just for fun though, never had a problem with a board taking in water. The biggest difference from the published weight I have measured has been +300 grams for a 70+ litres wing board (ca 5% difference). Not really noticeable.
On the picture, a A 5'0'' with 2 foot straps.

My fanatic 95 is 5'4 and feels heavy...It said 6.9kg on the box which I think is correct (I don't have digital scales but old analogue one suggested around 6.7)
Id love a lighter board ....I'm no jumper so don't think strength is a over bearing priority. But I think for light you need to not go production ie local custom
