As a beginner Winger, I thought it might be helpful to start a thread with suggestions for places and conditions to learn to wingfoil. (Apologies if there's one already).
My local spot is at Bon Beach on Port Philip Bay (Vic, AU). It's great in a Northerly at 10 to 15 knots - when you're just starting to see white caps on the water. But when the breeze is on-shore, it gets a bit choppy for a beginner. Just as importantly as the weather conditions, there's a local crew who always provide helpful tips and encouragement.
Yesterday I had a session at Inverloch (in Victoria). There's an estuary that's pretty protected from swell when the wind pics up. It has a great place to rig up and there are
also a bunch of helpful locals.
Finding a spot like this feels like it could make a difference to other people trying to learn.
So far, I'm finding the following criteria makes for a good place to learn to Wingfoil:
- minimal chop with a stiff breeze. This usually means getting out on a lake or estuary or picking days when the wind is cross or slightly off shore.
- a bunch of helpful locals (I can't stress this enough, so far I've met many wonderful helpful people who have kept me motivated and coming back for more.
Would love to hear others' suggestions
Where abouts did you go out from at Inverloch, I was thinking of heading down that way for a Foil.
