Give 2nd Wind a call, run through the starter lessons, at Lucky Bay. You can sail from there across to Brickies 1 and 2 and back most days, once you get some skills up. They do lessons at Lucky Bay. The lessons will also help you out with the gear questions you raised on windsurf general. If you sailed Red Witch, you will know the places. Most of the crew down there will help you out as you progress with lessons.
Once you get up and running then progress to Ocean.

Definitely the river.

Ocean sailing is something best attempted when you can waterstart... otherwise you'll get munched! (Well you'll get munched either way but at least you get SOME sailing in if you can waterstart)

Pelican Point is nice and safe as well. Bring all your gear down on a windy day, and pick someone who's just got off the water -- I don't know anyone who wouldn't give you a hand setting up your gear. Don't pick someone who's rigging up though, they'll be keen to get on the water themselves!

safety bay is also a brilliant spot running parallel with the shore

Hi Zues,

I would definitely choose Pelican Pt if I were you. The water is flat and shallow and you will feel very safe in these surroundings. At the same time there is a lot of other windsurfers sailing there on windy days, so you'll get a lot of inspiration!

I reckon it is a really good idea to get some windsurfing lessons. It will help you improve really fast and you'll save a lot of hours or even days on the water repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

Try to contact Windforce (www.windforce.com.au) or go down to Pelican Pt where you will find Windforce's windsurfing school (wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm). Here you'll be able to get lessons and maybe try out some of their new equipment.

Good luck

See you on the water!

Stephanie!

Pelican Point. For me, it was a very good place to learn. Principally because I felt very safe there.

You can not get blow out into the middle of the river, and you can stand wherever you are - providing your a beginner and only stay within ~750m of the shore.

The best time to learn is just after lunch when the sea breeze has just come in. Then its nice and consistent wind, but still warm enough to not freeze from failing in the water!

goodluck!
