One of the five most dangerous shark species has been found living in the Swan River prompting a warning from authorities.

Three bull sharks were captured in the Swan River this week and the Swan River Trust is urging people to remain vigilant when visiting the area specifically near Maylands.

The sharks, ranging in size from 70cm to 1.1m, were caught on Tuesday and Wednesday night between the South Perth foreshore and the Maylands Yacht Club.

Advertisement: Story continues below River users, especially dogs and children, wading or swimming in the shallows are being warned by Murdoch University researcher Dr Steeg Hoeksema of the presence of the aggressive sharks.

"We don't know a lot about bull sharks in the Swan River as there hasn't been any targeted research done on them; however anecdotal evidence would indicate they stay in the deeper waters of the Swan," he said.

Shark sightings can be reported to Water Police on 9442 8600 at any time.

i have noticed a very large increase in bull shark numbers...especially big ones
in the 2m + range, schooling in the shallow areas around pelican point and along Melville beach parade as well...they look quite aggresive as well
i would advise people who dont windsurf to give these areas a wide berth.

I saw one leap out of the water onto the fly bridge of a beautiful big motor boat and *sniff* take the captain in its jaws and then swim off. Please people, be careful out there.

You sure it wasn't one of those girls with no clothes on you sometimes see on big motor boats Pat? They have been known to "bite".

The best thing to do if your caught in the water is to ink yourself and make yourself look as least attractive as possible! Remember to wash before leaving the water as it can be a bit embarressing

Love the way they try to talk it up and make it sound like it is a new discovery or something.

They've always been there and the first recorded attack on a human in the Swan River was in the 1940's or something

Yip, count me in- I've seen em. I was standing on the sand bar at Lucky Bay adjusting my harness lines when 2 cruised past. I reckon they were around 4 to 6 foot (and fat too, they looked like a Staffie with fins). I ignored the badly located harness lines and got back on the board remarkably quickly and if I remember correctly, I didn't fall off the rest of the session!

Big fin cruised past me yesterday 2m away when I was slogging in a lull in that muddy soup that covers the channel between Ward Pt and Pt Grey in an easterly. It weren't no dolphin fin.

Went back to Novara straight after that to derig and rinse my wetsuit.

That was between Garden and the shore, south side of the causeway, was looking safe.... no waves and sheltered! Yeah right

That's not far from where we were ambushed by a 3m beastie (not kidding), the baskets sit in the channel waiting
