Where would be a good place to sail for someone starting out (Talent varies from not very good to REALLY bad :) in W.A? Preferably somewhere that doesn't get too lumpy .

I live in Safety Bay so i'm a bit partial.
Safety bay is a great place to learn. Land on 3 sides and a shallow bank to stop and turn around on.
A great crew of friendly and helpful fellow windsurfers to bounce questions off and get some tips.
good steady breezes and a grassed rigging area.
Hope we see you down there sometime

Nup. River. It handles any wind direction and you want smooth and 5-10kn for learning - a rarity on the ocean regardless of where.

Safety Bay is for those too far south to learn on the river.

Nah, river. Stinky black mud, cobbler and jellyfish complete the experience

Its about a half hour 40min drive, if you get a decent run on kwinana freeway.

I'd sail at the pond (safety bay) any day over the river... Nice flat water, sand banks at either end to land on, gybe over. Reasonably clean wind on a SSW or southerly too.

The river can also be good for learning on but can be a bit lumpy with boat traffic and chop....

I'm gonna be living closest to Safety Bay so all good, I can sail in about 15kts with the gear I have but struggle a bit beyond that and if it gets lumpy. (That's when I get to practice my falling and dismount techniques :). What's the depth like at Safety, my main board has 60cm fin.

2 words - weed Fin.
You're going to need a weed fin.
It's about 2m deep in the middle of the pond but lots and lots of weed
Someone may have one going cheap on here.

Howdy if you are keen to sail at Safety Bay I encourage you to come down and join the Safety Bay Windsurfing Club.

http://safetybaywindsurfingclub.org.au/

It's a fantastic club with great members , very social and this coming year should be excellent with club days having information and training sessions and of course the BBQ and Beers after sailing.

Hope to see you down there .

This should give you an idea of the place (Disclaimer: there may be a few more kites nowadays)

All of the footage except for the wave stuff is from Safety Bay:

Just to kick off an argument ! Where do people sail around Mandurah? There's a chance I may end up living in Falcon.
Can anyone recommend a weed fin to suit a JP Lightwind 145L, currently has a 60cm slalom fin, tuttle box. Any advice appreciated.

Hello.

I just started out. Yesterday was my first time. I'm in Mandurah and took my aircraft carrier from gumtree to nairns to have a go. That was fun and i think quite successful for a first go. I dont think nairns was a good spot with an onshore breeze though. Any idea where a good spot in the estuary will be tomorrow and wednesday with westerlies? It would be nice if i could sail back to where i started.

Navar boat ramp, you wont get into too much trouble there, and easy to get back to shore if you get stuck.
