Our very own WA yokel, Jesper Orth made the finals in the Ulsan (Korea) PWA Tour. He placed 4th in the losers finals against the likes of Swift, Pritchard and Asano.

The results:

still can't figure out how he managed to win all but one of the downwind slalom races at South Beach slalom on 5.8m in 25/35 knots.

to gybe a 5.8m in those conditions is impossible.

So Jesper made the losers final in the first race in Catalunya! What does PMS mean? You can guess what it comes up with in google...

The PMS was an over early.

The starts are so critical at that level, especially in the lighter wind events:
- Don't cross at full speed and your race is pretty much over
- Cross 3 sec late and your race is pretty much over
- Cross .01 sec early and your DSQ

Add gusting winds and 10 other guys fighting for position and it's not easy. Think that's one of the reasons why in slalom the top experienced sailors are so difficult to beat. There are others who can match them for speed on occasion but not on consistency.... it's those split second instinctive decisions that win or loose the race.

In the lighter winds unless someone mucks up, the order rarely changes after the 1st gybe as once in front you have clean air and water which is a big advantage.

With that said watching 8-10 guys charging towards the line a full pelt as one is pretty cool to watch.

From the KA site:

Jesper went straight to the losers final but got a PMS start so ended the first day of racing in 16th position.

The next day the wind teased but never got strong enough for racing. On the 3rd day 6 out of 8 heats were completed.

Starting the 4th day Jesper won the 8’th heat passing Dunkerbeck at the mark with his Koncept 8.3 !!!.
In the quarterfinal recovering from an average start he attacked for a position for the semi final, but pushed a little too much and ended nearly in a sail 360l and fell in the water.

So there are nearly 2 rounds completed and 2 days left of the competition.

KA Sails

There was no more racing for the rest of the event.... just waiting on the beach.
