Have seen some recent posts about New Cal and great bump and jump conditions and a little wave just to the right of the island off the main sailing beach....

Anyone know of actual wave sailing spots (off shore reef)

Being so close to East Coast Australia and receiving pretty consistent trade winds through our cooler winter months it has to be worth a look ????

One of my mates is living and working over in New Cal until september, I am hoping to go visit before he finishes up his stint... probably thinking around July/August for a winter escape (that or go snowboarding). Whats the wind/waves like this time of year, he says he sees kiters and windsurfers out all the time there, but i think its mostly flat water stuff. If there is no wind, we can just go diving which is cool with me.

Hadn't seen the topic as I'm not a wave rider (too old and too scared )

Nouméa (capital city) has a nice wave spot that only operates at high tide, called Magenta, located next to domestic airport which is good as the kite surfers aren't allowed there.

For big wave riding you have to team up with the locals as it all happens on the reef (we have a reef barrier that goes all around our lagoon)
You either need a boat or take a drive to the ouano surf camp (1.00h drive) and take off from there to the reef just in front, some massive glossy waves.(the one al mc leod posted)

Season wise you're best off from october to may, tradewinds and warm water.
Just check out this guy's website for awesome pics :

How far offshore is this? I haven't seen any land in any of the footage. I assume you need a boat to get there?

It's a reef pass, you need a boat to get there.

two options :
by boat straight from the beach : 20 mn
by boat from a surfer resort on a small island just next to the the spot : 5 mn

whatever you choose you need a boat

Nice, older video, he changed his van since...

He's one of (if not the) the best wave riders here. I think he spent a couple of years on the pwa tour.

His jp board is for sale @ 600$ at the moment

Hiya Sean - back in cold rainy Sydney!

Just had a week in Noumea at Anse Vata.
When it blows there (most days to 25 kts) you get 1m ramps to jump in the bay.

If you venture past the first island (Duck Is) into the main channel there's a decent 1.5m ocean swell. (Crossed it in water taxi taking my better half snorkelling to Ilot M'aitre, the next island out).

Plenty of windsurfers & lots of modern gear to sail & to rent. $25-35 per hour.
Will post some photos & vid later. Good value location with lots of friendly sailors (and even kiters!)

Hi Peter,

Really glad you enjoyed it !!!

Unfortunately the conditions you mention are now gone... We are having a full week of 30 knts with gusts up to 40....

My back is still hurting from thursday's session and that brief but intense contact with the reef...

All aussie windsurfers most welcome to come over and enjoy our great conditions !!!

light wind after may : 10/15knts / water gets cold (for me..) :20°C

I would mostly recommend from october to april.

We're lucky to have very regular SE winds, so it's good all year round, it's just that we're lazy buggers that won't go in the water if it's cold or cloudy.....
