After reluctantly throwing in the towel after an hour or so last night at St K when it completely dropped out and then being blown off my feet this arvo at St K in a 30+ kn NW (only picking up lunch - working
), the next time I'll be able to get out is Friday pm. Another NW is forecast for the Bay. I just wondered what the view was about sailing in a NW at St K or Elwood. Any good? Don't? Indifferent? If rubbish, then appreciate a pointer on somewhere reasonably local.
Matthew - appreciated the tips last night.
Green Point would be my bet - although only sailed there on a northerly, rather than a north west. Might have a bit of a shore-break to deal with though as it wraps in to the launch point.
St. Kilda would prob be too gusty I reckon.
See ya out there...
Maybe top end of Elwood/Point Ormond? only ever sailed there on a NW but seems quite good. Good parking ,rigging etc.
If its NW, rather than N, then Elwood or Pt.Ormond is dead cross-shore -> basically the more W it gets, the better Elwood gets as it is less gusty and good/increasing swell.
If its more N / NE, then I find Green Point a bit better -> usually a bit less gusty. The real issue with NE is the direction, see:
Point Ormond: www.google.com:443/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=-37.881831,144.976101&spn=0.034617,0.080681&t=h&z=14
Green Point: maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-37.926326,144.985628&spn=0.034596,0.080681&t=h&z=14
Was out this morning in NNW (according to the seabreeze direction) at Green Point... pretty good sailing, although I was stacked on a 4.2 and in need of a board smaller than my 84l JP FSW... hectic conditions. Super high-tide as well, which eliminated the reef problem there, and the wind direction allowed me to sail straight from the beach.
Good fun...
Sorry I missed you mate - sounds like it was managable sailing a little earlier - by the time I got out it was pretty full-on.
I got there about 9:20 - because I had to get up at 5:30 to get all the way over to Croydon (from Port Melbourne) to pick up my van from the mechanics...
Combine a 5:30 start with a couple of cancelled trains and a brand new dent in my van from the time at the garage
it was gone 9 before I arrived.
Thank god I got a decent sail in, otherwise yesterday (with the failed session at Dawson St / St. Kilda last night and the parking ticket) would have been a complete disaster!
Next time it blows up a northerly before work I'll be at Green Point again early early early...
