Best wind is SE to SW, most Windsurfers launch in the area shown below. Exclusion zones? what zones? I wouldn't sail closer to the pier, full of kiters & shallow.
One the beach side you have to pay for parking, they are pretty strict. Opposite side its free, traffic island in middle has a great grassy rigging area. Watch out for runners, chicks, cyclists & weirdos as you carry your rig across the path. Plenty of good scenery about. There are a heap of good spots south of st kilda too that others can elaborate about.

"When you say there are some spots south, would the park just south of the Marina and north of Elwood Park be accessible ( I think it is Moran Reserve....just north of Glen Huntly Rd)?" yeah you can sail there but there is a rockwall- most guys go a little closer to Elwood Park out in front of the dinghy club (winds NW to SE). You have to pay for parking here or you can park on beach road opposite around Byrne Ave - I think its free.

Other places further south are:
Dendy St brighton (parking free, winds S to N)
Green Point (parking $$, winds S to N)
Hampton Beach (parking free, Winds S to N) -a little north of sandringham yacht club
Ricketts point (havent sailed there)

I'm heading to Melbourne from Canberra on Wednesday (tomorrow) and plan to windsurf sometime between Thurs and Sat near St Kilda. Where is the best place to launch and are there exclusion zones for windsurfers?

What is the best wind direction for that area?....and which days leading up to the weekend would be the best time to go based on prevailing forecasts?
