WSW is the best but anything with south is good
NW can be good on the inlet with a really high tide and 20-25 knots. Sail across the shallows to the north of the entry track. Keep an eye on the tide and depth though. Peter J and I did some good one hours a few years ago up there! NW can also produce good speed runs up the Yanakie channel on low tide (small window). WNW is a bit square for that channel but good for just blasting up and down. Anything from north west quarter is much more gusty than WSW to SW but can sometimes be a lot of fun.
Each to their own..but nw is awesome for hopping in the water at the gap and riding wave after wave downwind to the shop...tiring but great fun...
Thanks everyone for the advice, Ginger pom thanks but i stay away from the surf nowdays. Sailquik thats some grate info, thanks heaps. Ive just moved to Dubbo for work(long story) the up side is i now get weekends off so im interested is knowing what wind directions work best so i can do the run down on friday nights to sails all weekend.
Hoping for some guidance. I am pretty new to waves and only ever sailed the inlet at Sandy Point. I am heading down friday for a few days this weekend. The friday forecast looks good for NW. Saturday looks pretty S'ly so most likely I will go the inlet then. For this wind friday do people try to get as far to the inlet as possible or is it fine to sail out from the shop down the beach and back down a few waves? I saw Ginger Pom's comment but it looks a long way down to the inlet from the shop! I am wondering exactly how it would work given my inexperience wave sailing?

I'm not much of a wave sailor any more, but I used to really enjoy downwind runs on NW or SE between the Gap and Sandy Pt for West to NW and Sandy to Waratah in East to SE.
In Westerlies to WNW, (or Easterlies) the best launch is at 'The Gap', a carpark just behind the dunes where the Waratah road meets the beach and turn 90 degrees to the West. When it is more NW (or ESE) many sailors launch at the Sandy Pt SLSC or at Ned Neals Lookout at the Western end of town.
If you are really keen and fit, on Easterlies, you can carry your gear across the sand spit at the inlet to 'Longarms' where the wind is very steady, cross off, and the waves a bit bigger than further west.
Awesome. Thanks for all the info. I was not sure about where the Gap was but realised it must be near Waratah. I even googled the Gap and Sandy Point and this is what wiki came up with:
"Sandy Point was formerly a peninsula but now is an island on the west coast of the of
Newfoundland which has been recently transformed into a hidden island as a result of
sea level rise and ocean storm-induced coastal erosion. Its former connecting isthmus
is known to locals as "The Gap" or "Fannies Crack"
I couldn't see anything like that near Waratah on google maps 
Anyway, the forecast is a bit different as the front is not looking as strong, delayed and more Westerly but only early tomorrow morning before going S/SW. From your description may still be good for a short window. My mate has come down with a strained heart muscle and a fever, so I will have to see if I make it this time but I am keen to give that downwind run a go at some point.

Actually, the forecast and tides look pretty good for a nice flat water sail on the inlet tomorrow. from about 10am to late afternoon. Hopefully 15-25 knots SW.
