I'm Alvin or xALmoN singapore, and I'm a student studying at RMIT, i used to windsurf between 1999 and 2002 as part of my school team but its been quite a long time since i've sailed.
Is there any place that rents equipment or do i actually have to buy my own? Its been 8 years at least so i'm sure there's been progress. Back then when i was a kid, i didn't really know what equipment they gave me so i'm also clueless about gear.
And is there anywhere i can regain my rusty set of skills? I'm was used to up to 25knots of wind, (yeah not that good a sailor) and i believe i can handle even less than that now.

SHQ in Brighton rents equipment, and I think that RPS in Elwood might do too.
There's lots of sailing to be had here in the summer - you can get out on the sea breeze several evening a week if you have your own equipment (renting will get to be a pain and expensive) and if the weather is playing ball. There's also loads of stuff for sale on this site, and RPS and SHQ have stocks of new and used gear.
If you do go down the path of buying your own equipment then ask for advice on here. Make sure you give your ability, size, weight, etc - it'll help you get some informed advice.
The equipment has moved on since '02 - the boards are shorter and wider in the main, which makes them easier to sail (that's a huge generalisation though). Everything has basically got a bit easier for the average sailor - rigs lighter and more responsive, boards easier to sail, etc. You'll still recognise everything though - the principles have stayed the same.

Welcome Alvin! If you join Windsurfing Victoria you can use the rental gear at SHQ for free. I think membership is about $70 per year. It also gives you some insurance cover. Otherwise rental at SHQ is about $80 for four hours I think. If you are here for more than a year or even just over next summer it is probably worth buying some gear, if the budget allows. Second hand stuff can be had for quite reasonable prices. Check the buy and sell section here. But agreeing with Ian, feel free to post questions here for advice on suitability of gear. There is some crap out there - ie it is better to avoid the really old stuff. Newer gear will be easier to learn on.
Depending upon where you are living you might even find someone to ride share with to the various windsurfing spots.

Once you have some gear ask around on this forum where folks will be sailing. Tons of helpful and friendly folk here. As a University student myself I know you'll get lots of sailing time.

Where do you plan to sail? if you need a sail buddy let me know ar as I am quite new as well here and i'm from overseas too. If you can you should try and demo some boards like I am doing now to get an idea what gear will compliment you.

We set the club up for sailors who want to sail together, learn new skills and have fun! During the year, we run informal sail days, road trips, coaching days and come and try days in conjunction with our very supportive shops and sail manufacturers.
At the moment we have nearly 60 members.....oh yeah...and membership is free ( just the right price for a student!!)...
