Hi, I'm moving to Melbourne in Sept from Canada and was wondering:
-windy season?
-Strength of wind?
-wet suit needed and what size?
-good kiting within a 2hr drive from Melbourne?
Thanks!
Hello Mootumbo,
Welcome to Melbourne, but you're in the wrong forum.
Short replies:
- 2nd week of June until March. September to January is probably the best.
- Mainly 10 - 20 kts, but up to 40 kts about 6 times per year. Kiters seem to have settled on modern 11-12m sizes for most conditions.
- Two wetties are needed: 3/2 double-sided in summer (we have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, so protect yourself!) and 4/3 in winter (possibly with a 1 - 2 heat reflective, long sleeved vest for the really cold days (by ours standards)).
- Can't answer.
Seabreeze is a great area for wind graphs and info (www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/vic.asp,) but also hunt around this site: http://www.baywx.com/
Hope this helps.
To answer the last point - depends on your skill level
- Bump'n'dangle about 10-15 mins from the central city, ie: St Kilda, Brighton or Altona
- Heaps of good spots within 2hrs: bump/dangle anywhere on Port Philip Bay, surf at Torquay or Philip Island, speed at Inverloch.
