On my morning bike ride to work this morning i noticed a ruddy great goyne being built almost directly in front of the big windsurfing sign at Middle Park (just to the north of the kite beach) opposite Langridge st.

Kinda sad really... was my spot of choice 10 years ago.

yup - the rocks are being added this week.... Eventually, there will be more sand added between the groins, so as to make the beach wider. But in the meantime, it will mean that we have to walk out futher before we launch. Overall it shouldn't create too much of a problem.

Oh awesome - I thought they'd finished messing around with Middle Park.

The f****** council needs a good old-fashioned shoeing for this. It's an idiotic self-defeating waste of money that trashes a good spot and makes a mess of the beach for everyone. It's probably going to seriously inconvienience some of the kiters too.

How long before someone finishes up on one of these groynes? The Taser that Matt and I rescued the other night very nearly wound up on one of them, and I bet we're going to get some kiters hit this one over the next couple of weeks because they'll still be sailing from their usual spot, whereas we're going to have to move.

In fact, we're going to have to launch west of the groyne that's already been built - right in what can be quite a punishing shore-break on a windy day.

Either that or we're going to have to get cosy with the kites.

Honestly, will these coastal engineering idiots ever learn anything from the mistakes made elsewhere in the world?

NOT HAPPY

I suspected that this was part of the plans, but because everything had gone quiet down there I thought we might have got away with it.

That's it. I'm moving to WA...
...mind you, if anything I think they might be better at f***ing up good spots that the Victorians are (Spot X, Coro)

City-side of the groyne is a designated no-windsurfing zone of course...

I think they've actually changed those rules as part of the review of Port Philp Bay usage thing going on... I'd love to see them try and catch me though...

They'd probably catch me... A heavily pregnant employee of Macca's would probably catch me...

Went down to have a look last night, and it's a right mess.

It's going to be a 60 metre long groyne made of broken rock, not like the other two they've built which are concrete drains. It's going to get pretty close sailing out of there on a SW - not much angle to play with to clear the next drain.

Of course, I could be wrong about this whole thing and we'll finish up with 60 metre wide sand beach, hence no problem... (my arse).

Another question - why couldn't they have done this in July?

Indeed... although its better than doing it in December, which they did for the other groins -> thus completely stuffing it for the beach go'ers.
